Default Car is very loud

Got 2 problems with my new pt cruiser

a constant humming/rattling noise over 40km/hr around where the vin plate is. Absolutely annoying as hell.

It has a lot of road noise. On the highway its got a constant rumble. Not engine noise or exhaust. Just a rumble, Lots of road noise, Is this normal or do I need new wheel bearings or something?

I would suggest jacking up the front of the Pt Cruiser put it gear and see if the noise is still there when you get the speed up to the speed you usually hear the noise.

If the noise is still there then try locating the noise on the driver's side or passenger side. The most common problem is the bearings.

If no noise then check each tire. You might have a tire that went bad. Inspect for bubbles, out of round on each tire.

Or maybe if the car makes the noise on a gradual left or right bend in the road.

Sounds like a wheel bearing.

The dash might not be clipped in all the way or the front dash speaker is loose.

This is most likely tire noise. PT's are truck based & tires make a world of difference, you will never get it to sound/ride like a car.

got my grandpa to give it a check. He thinks its the wheel bearing.

Looks like something i can do except pressing it into the old hub. Can that be done myself or will I have to take it to a shop to do that?

If you remove the knuckle from the car, a shop will usually press the bearing for ~$40

Also consider a new wheel hub. New wheel hubs are fairly cheap but your used one would work. If me, I would go online to Rock Auto, put in your car and then look up the parts you need. Put it all in a shopping cart and check the final price with shipping. Chances are it will be less than half of what the parts cost at the parts store.

The only special tools required are a shaft/hub separator, tie rod end separator, a shop press and the right size dies for the press to remove the hub and bearing. The "Loan-a-Tool" programs at both Autozone and Advance Auto have all this except for the shop press. You can even get the press dies in a loaner ball joint press kit. You just put up a deposit and then get it back would you return the stuff. However, if you don't own a press, getting the bearing pressed out and the new one in at a shop is likely going to be the way to go.

Here's a pretty good video. It shows most of the work except for pressing in the new bearing. This guy had that done at a machine shop.

And here's a video showing the bearing press out/in part.

If you decide to do this replacement yourself make sure when you buy the wheel bearings that you compare the old ones with the new ones. Make sure you check the configuration on both sides of the bearings. We had a member that bought wheel bearings and one of the wheel bearings had the wrong configuration on one side so he had to take it all apart again, get the right wheel bearing, and then put it all back together again.
