Default Stages!

Random thought of the day:

Did any years of the GT have a stage 2, 3 etc or was it only stage 1? I know the Neon had more.

What distinguished them, save for power and badging?

Never was a Stage 2 for the PT in any year.

Any reference seen to Stage 2 PT is usually from Syked Tuning who has taken the Neon Stage 2 parameters and programmed a PT firmware to match.

Ops...not accurate^^ There was actually a STAGE 2 that was on the developing board at the business contracted by Chrysler for the PT Cruiser STAGE 1 kits. And even a part number was generated and shown in a DEALER PERFORMANCE PARTS CATALOG for the PT Cruiser. However because the EPA and the the bean counters at Chrysler they not only canceled that that but discontinued the STAGE 1 kits as well.

Besides the name of STAGE parts or kits can really be attached to anything a marketer or producer feels will sell something.

Maybe, but as far as I'm aware nobody could ever actually order the Mopar Stage 2 for a PT...

Regardless, there are other options anyway.

Yep. There was never a Mopar Stage 2 PCM offered for the PT but there was for the Neon SRT4. Nether the Stage 1 (for PT or SRT4) nor the Stage 2 (for SRT 4) would meet EPA standards and were sold for off-road use only. From a historical perspective, the information NitroPT provided is very good to know too if it can be verified.

The Sykes Stage 2 for the PT is based on the one for the SRT4 but has transmission management and other required items for the PT. Similar to the custom Sykes Stage 1 (15 psi) PCM I have in my PT, it's a hybrid. To use the Sykes Stage 2 PCM (16 to 18 psi), you will need larger injectors, wastegate with a stronger spring, and 3 Bar MAP and TIP sensors. Kevin at Sykes can provide the details on these. Those that have gizmos that can do custom tuning themselves may be able to approach higher boost pressures without all these items. However, there are upper safe limits on the OEM injectors, sensors outputs and wastegate spring. With these extra "Stage 2" items, some with custom programming have claimed safely running up to 21 psi with the stock turbocharger. But none of our current active members have done this on a PT Cruiser or SRT4 to my knowledge.

Also note that the "Stage" terminology is just a marketing thing. Mopar and third party manufacturers offer a number of different Stage items for many different cars. For the PT Cruiser, the term Stage 1 is usually used when discussing the street performance PCM originally programed by Flight Systems for Mopar and sold as an add-on by Chrysler dealerships. But there were various Stage suspension parts too.

Generally, Stage 1 indicates street performance. Stage 2 indicates street and track. And Stage 3 indicates dedicated or primarily track. However, because these are just marketing terms without hard definitions, you will see items that don't meet these criteria. Mopar sold add-on street performance suspension items for some cars as "Stage 2" meaning beyond just a Stage 1 engine package. The meaning of "Stage" can be all over the place.
