Default oil consumption

My 2008 PT base has about 73K miles on it. Got it used about 9 yrs ago with about 17K on it. Oil and filter are changed every 3000 mi or so. It has always used about a quart of oil between oil changes. Have always used 5 qts. 5W-30 conventional oil at each oil/filter change per owners manual.

Also, anybody using Marvel Mystery Oil ? Have noticed some lifter noise for the first couple of miles after a cold start (anything 30F and below). A quart of MMO (in place of one of the quarts of 5W-30 at oil change) seems to help quiet things down.

Would like to know others experience with oil consumption and MMO. Thanks.

I've only had my 09 Base for 21 months but that is about what I've experienced too (about 1 quart in 2-3000 miles) and I've been changing the oil about every 4000 miles. I did a compression check on the cylinders when I bought it and they all held about 122-125 psi so I figured it was GTG in that area so a simple dipstick check at every fillup is plenty.

Lately I've been using fully synthetic oil in all my cars because the difference in price is not as big as it was several years ago.

I've had my PT since new and oil and filter have always been changed every 3,000 miles, with Castrol 5w30 and over 100,000 miles I switched to the Castrol High-Mileage 5w30. It has always used about a quart between oil changes and that is considered normal according to Chrysler Customer Service.

Oil consumption (not leaking)being reported in the amount loss regardless what you read even if it may seem like facts from even the auto manufacturer is NOT normal for a gasoline 1.6 or 2.5 Chrysler engine.

There are mechanical reason if no leak why these 2 specific engines are using oil.

One way to determine what is going on is to spend a small investment and have your oil checked.

On one of my Pt Cruisers I had been burning a quart every 1800 miles even after replacing the PCV valve and air filter. After replacing the valve guides and seals it only burns 1/8 of a quart of oil every 3,000 miles. This is using Mobile One 5w30 that I used before and after replacing the valve guides and seals. It has 100,000 miles on it.

If you have your mechanic replace your head gasket in the future make sure they replace your valve guides and valve stem seals so you will even burn less engine oil. With our Pt Cruisers they both burned about the a quart of oil every 3,000 miles when we got them and both were bought with about 12,000 miles on them.

Maybe something to keep in mind for the future, but my PT really only uses about 1/2 qt per 3,000 mile oil change, not enough to worry about since it's well within the Chrysler standards. There are no external leaks, the air filter and PCV have been replaced per the recommended intervals. Engine is running just as strong now as it ever has. No reason to go tearing into, if it ain't broke.

On the issue of oil consumption, I received this reply this morning from Chrysler Customer Service:

"Thank you for contacting the FCA Customer Assistance Center.

I can understand that having the oil go down by a quart at every oil
change could cause you some level of concern Rick.

You are correct in your assumption of the oil consumption being normal.
According to the available information, for mileages below 50,000, the
normal oil consumption is one quart for each 2,000 miles driven. For
mileages above 50,000, normal oil consumption is one quart for each 750
miles driven.

If you are still worried about the usage rate of the oil, please have
one of our dealerships conduct a consumption test if you wish. It is
likely that it will be counted as normal though, as the dealer has
access to the same details.

Thank you again for your email Rick. Should you require additional
assistance, or have any new information to provide, please reply to this
email message or call 1-800-247-9753.

Sincerely,

Royal

Customer Service Representative
FCA Customer Assistance Center"
