Question PT Cruiser Limited - Hard To Go Into Gear In Cold Weather

I own a 2007 PT Cruiser Limited - 110k...automatic

During the past week when it has been down in the 20s, my car seems to have a hard time going into gear when it first starts. This is what happens...

I will start my car and let it run a couple of mins...then shift into Reverse to back out of the driveway. When I shift into Drive to start driving forward it will act like it doesn't want to go into gear. Then it will suddenly go into gear and I can begin to drive normally without any further problems on my 20 min/17 mile trip to work. I might add that when I get ready to drive home I don't have any problems shifting into gear at all.

Do you think this could be because of the cold weather ? I have never had this problem before. Or could this be a sign of troubles to come ? Thanks

Under the battery tray is the shift linkage...it's possible that it's getting wet & freezing or you have a tear in the rubber cable cover & that is freezing.

Update...today when I got ready to leave for work I decided to test my car before I left the driveway. *I backed up halfway down the drive way..put it back in drive and pulled back up. *When I tried to go back in reverse to drive all the way down the driveway...it wouldn't kick into reverse. *After giving it some more gas it eventually went into gear. *I got out in the street and tried to shift into drive..it wouldn't go into gear. *Again I gave it more more gas and it eventually kicked into gear. *I however had no further problems when going to run an errand...and eventually driving to work. *

Sounds to me like you need to change the filter. I'll bet it's dirty and the cold fluid is having trouble getting through it. Oh, and change the fluid too, not just the filter. ATF+4 ONLY.

I saw a post on this forum from a few years back that a fellow PT Cruiser owner had the identical problem. Seems like it is related to the cold. But I am of course open to any and all suggestions.

Not exactly the same, but I had an old Chevy once that did just about the same thing. Turns out the speed sensor had gone bad. Not sure if these cars have them or if they operate the sane. Check for codes?

Replace your fluid as it's old. When transmission fluid breaks down, it may appear just fine but it won't work as good as it should when new, and usually the symptoms can appear in colder ambient temperatures, but as the fluid warms up, most of the symptoms will go away.

I suggest that you get some consumables from AMSOIL .
Order a bottle of AMS transmission and oil flush.
Order a transmission filter
order the correct amount of replacement oil, get the OE Multi-Vehicle Synthetic Automatic Transmission Fluid (OTFQT) which is compatible with ATF+4 specification. Good quality synthetic transmission oil is essentially good for the remaining life of an older used vehicle.

Follow the instructions on the oil flush, replace the filter, and replace the fluid. Make sure to follow the OEM procedure to fill the transmission with the correct amount of fluid and check it according to the oil line on the dipstick against the temperature of the oil.

I just had the transmission oil replaced on my 2005 dodge durango, I was experiencing rough 1-2 shifts when the engine was cold and driving heavy. Sometimes the engine would stall out after shifting from park and coming to a stop after moving ahead or in reverse. After replacing the oil, all the issues went away and it's shifting smoother than a knife through a bowl of whipped cream.

My '66 Mustang with its rip roaring 200 cubic inch 6 cylinder and C4 three speed automatic transmission behaved exactly as you describe when its bands and clutches had worn out and its seals had petrified (i.e. the transmission needed to be rebuilt). Which may or may not be germane to what's going on with your PT Cruiser.
