Default Code P0601 showed up on dash, do I have to take it to Chrysler to get a new computer?

That's what the mechanic told me, I just wanted to be sure that's the case. In my experience the dealerships rip you off even more than the auto shops =/

Apparently I won't be able to pass inspection unless I get this code removed >_<

He also mentioned finding a mechanic that specialized in Chrysler's but I'm not sure where to look for that. Any suggestions (in NYC)?

Thanks so much for any and all advice fellow PT owners/enthusiasts!

If your PT needs a new PCM, I would get one off Ebay for a lot cheaper than the dealer wants, and they are truly plug-n-play installation, takes about 15 minutes.

From what I see from some of your previous posts, do you still have the '01?

Several months ago I bought a PCM from this Ebay seller, and this is one that they offer for yours:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Chrysler-PT...1X4uzW&vxp=mtr

They program the VIN into the computer and offer a Lifetime Warranty on it.

The P0601 error is very common on 2001 PT Cruisers. The manufacturer used a faulty memory chip in the PCM and it sometimes fail. To my knowledge, no one has reported any verifiable problem with their PT Cruiser because of this code. But it is supposed to never go away unless the PCM is either repaired or replaced.

If me, I would contact forum member, Myckee, first. He has a small PCM replacement business and he has advanced equipment to reflash and run diagnostics on used PCM's. And he may have one he can sell you. Just contact him by PCM.

My second choice is AutoComputerExchange.com. This is who I bought from when I fixed the P0601 in my own 2001 PT Limited. They offer a lifetime warranty. They also sometimes offered better deals for the PCM's they sell on eBay.

The cost of this PCM should be under $200 and all you need to replace it is a 10 mm wrench. And a good used one should likely last the remaining life of your PT. So don't get caught up in paying hundreds and hundreds of dollars for a new one or reburbed one from a dealership or shop.

Thank you so much! I do still have the '01 and somehow it's still under 100k miles

One concern though, what may seem like plug and play to you could be a tall order for me. I barely know how to check my oil

I'm pretty good with computers though, and generally figuring out how things work/are put together. I just never put any effort into learning about cars (city slicker). Anyway what I'm getting at is, are there possibly any tutorial videos or step by step instructions I could follow to do the installation myself?

Thanks to you as well! Extremely helpful, I will contact that user to see if there's any cheaper solution than buying a brand new one.

Also if not, same question to you, are there any tutorials you're aware of on how to install it?

I just ran this by my brother who I share the car with and is the one who took it to a mechanic for diagnosis. He said the mechanic urged him to get it done by the dealership or someone who specializes in Chrysler because "if you mess it up you might as well roll the car into the river" lol. Overly dramatic, but that scares the bejeesus out of me! Is there any truth to that?

He may have had or hear of some bad experiences. The hardest part for you would be getting disconnecting the battery and taking the clips off that secure the wires to the computer.
they are keyed so they can only fit in one slot.

Yes there is a chance you get a bad one and have to return the replacement.
I'm sure my sister can do it..

Looking quickly at all your posts since you joined I would recomend that you NOT change your own PCM!

I would recomend to start looking for a good general auto service shop in your area. First talk to friends and co-workers and get an idea who they use.
If that does not work call or go by a few and see if you feel good about what the technician has to say overall. I say this because IMHO you need to develop a rapport with some service shop sooner or later to get some repairs done especially on a high mileage and over 10 year old vehicle.

Any specific examples? Did you report these bad shops to the NY Dept of Transportation?

While I dont agree with the "blanket" statement about Dealership Service Departments...the place you register complaints is the BBB = Better Business Bureau.
