Default Trans "bump" when downshifting

I've read this can indicate a problem with the transmission but wanted to check in. It's an NA '02 with about 112K. Is this an issue that can be remedied without a specialist (i.e. - work on it myself?) or will I need a pro? It happens occasionally when I get down to around 15 mph +-. Thanks.

Have you checked your upper and especially lower torque struts (engine mounts)? Torn bushings can make it feel like a transmission problem.

Coast to about 5 MPH, then push the accelerator (you don't have to floor it). If you feel a big clunk, that may be the engine twisting forward without a torque strut holding it. You can probably notice it by also pushing the top of the engine forward and back. If you feel little or no resistance, the torque strut bushings are worn out and torn.

If that is the case, the good news is the upper and lower torque struts are about $10 each and take about 1/2 hour to replace and adjust (important to adjust them).

Thanks. Wish it was that simple but I replaced both those struts about 2k ago.

Have you checked the Transmission fluid level? Or maybe it's time for a flush and fill with a new filter.

Just some quick ideas.

First, listen to rsrocket1. It may well be a torque strut or the passenger side center mount.

If no joy, another thing that can cause a bump on a downshift is a bad CV joint. This is because the direction of force reverses on a downshift so if the joint has slack in it, it will bump when the force is reversed. The inner joint will be more likely because the outer one will often click and bump when turning. And if it's a turbo PT, check the intermediate CV shaft carrier bearing as well.

Does this bump occur while coasting to a stop or when you get back into the throttle while rolling?

My 06 with 162 K has the occasional 2 - 1 bump when getting back into the throttle. In my case the trans down shifts at slightly too high a road speed and the motor does not have a chance to get up to speed. ( The down shift occurs at throttle tip in )
