Same car. I took it off the road and have been driving my other one. I'm thinking I'd like to put it back on the road this spring. I haven't played with this one in a year now. My buddy had the same problem with a chev Blazer said it was a canister under the hood. Is this possible?

What year? This is from the 06 manual.

I don't have a clear description on flows, but I'd say:

When filling, air exits through 5 / 7 , some goes back up the vent tube 6 but most goes through 12 on it's way to canister 14. The flow might also be through 10 then to 12 / 14.

Item 5 is a check valve, if this is stuck air can't escape during filling. Item might contain a check valve as well but I tend to think this is for vapor recovery post filling.

Modern cars have vapor recovery during the filling process in addition to vapor recovery when the car is sitting. If the vapors ( air ) can escape then filling, the tank acts as it is full.

the evap system is completely clogged. the gas vapors are building up causing a back pressure to push the release diaphragm on the filler handle.
you would have to learn how all the breathing systems work first and then you potentially have to take out the tank and test all the components. i suggest to get the alldata and read the description and operation for the fuel tank and evap system.

Thanks for the input. It's a 2001. I guess some things are allowed to clog up it has 211K on it. Sounds like a summer project . We just got 20" of the wettest heaviest snow I have ever seen. But we're another day closer to spring.

Couple things to check on that. I just had this issue myself and got it fixed last week along with the other issues i was having.

For me, the issue was a Check Valve in the Gas Tank. Which can not be changed separately. So the solution was to buy a new gas tank. $700 for a new tank but I opted to buy a certified used tank. Worked out well so far. However, this may not be the case for your PT. It may or may not. However other things to look at is a ball or something in the fuel/evap system ( which i was told that ball only prevents people from from syphoning gas from the tank) and a possibly clogged charcoal canister. But, i would have to say that your issue is the Check Valve in the gas tank. My guess as it was my issue. Total cost to me for the used tank and labor was $500.

This check valve / ball in the inlet of tank is to prevent fuel loss during a roll over / fuel filler being damaged / cap left off.

There is also a check valve in the evap vent to prevent liquid fuel from entering the evap system either by overfilling or roll over.
