Default Quick question

How far off the floor should the clutch let out on a 5 speed PT?

i like it to engage as high up from the floor as possible(meaning the pedal doesn't need to be pressed very far to the floor). generally easier to shift when the clutch engages only pushing the pedal a couple inches

if you're needing to stomp the pedal down to get it into first at idle or just feel the pedal is too low, try this to raise the pedal position:
GT CLutch pedal adjustment

ideally the clutch pedal has 1/4" to 1/2" of free play(slop) when you lightly wiggle the pedal up and down with your fingers

1/4" preferred IMO. that ensures enough slack for it to engage completely and will feel "right", it also allows adequate air gap for high rpm "shifting like you stole it".

Thanks rob302, I'm on my way to look at an '04 GT and the only thing the guy said when I spoke with him over the phone was he felt the clutch let out too low and his mech adjusted it out about a half and inch and that was all it would adjust.

Of course, he could not define 'low.' I'll know in about an hour.

NOT SO QUICK, SECOND QUESTION

Just got back from looking at the car. Needs some body work: right render fender pushed in, may be able to just pull out, a 6 to 7 inch oval in the back hatch, guessing truck bumper, problem it is creased at the top like what ever hit it had a sharp edge, front fascia needs replaced and it will need a new windshield soon.

Mechanically: Timing belt job, of course, and the clutch lets out about one inch above the floor. You need to plant it to put it in gear. Shifts fine while driving. Engine is quiet and smooth, turbo is strong, from about 35 to 60 guess-ti-mate just over two seconds. Car has 99,980 on the clock.

Body has no rust on it. Driven daily by a 50+ year old female pre-school teacher. The vehicle also has the much sought after dual exhaust on it! '04 PT GT.

The question. . . worth 2500?

The value depends on your area. PT Cruisers have basically bottomed-out in value. So they are often as cheap as any other possible car in the same condition. It also means the value in Kelley or NADA means very little.

In my area, your car would be worth around $2500 maximum without the rear fender damage. That range with no damage would likely be $1500 to $2500 depending on condition and mileage. The damaged fender can really hurt your on this.

To determine what your car should actually sell for, start monitoring Craigslist for cars similar to yours. Normally sellers will have a higher asking price but then lower it as time goes on until it sells and disappears from Craigslist. This final lowest price will be close to what your car might bring. Ignore cars that never sell and where the price never goes down. That often just indicates a hard-headed seller. However, even at the final lowest price you can never know the deal-making done when the car actually sold. So I normally figure at least 10% below this lowest price.

Thanks Handy, I've been watching Craig's List in my area and surrounding areas for a while now. I've actually gone to look at 6 or 7 turbos, lite or GT doesn't seem to matter, and all have been 'I wont go below 2500.'

I probably wont buy this one either, because I can not justify the cost with what I have to put into it to get it back to the point I'd want the car.

But, thanks for your input my friend always appreciated.

That's it!

I did not mention the color, didn't want people at home throwing up! The flames are vinyl and have been on the car for years, unfortunately!
