Default A/C Issue/Won't kick on

With the spring/summer season coming into play soon, I wanted to see if my A/C is in fact working. Never used it before and didnt know if it ever did as I bought it used from Tennessee.

After turning it on/pushing the A/C Button, nothing happened. So I looked at the A/C Cycle Switch on the passenger side of the engine. Shook it and heard nothing. Been told if I dont hear anything while shaking it, it's a bad sensor/switch. So, I replaced it and still nothing. It could be low on Freon and im not charging it myself. A. Don't know how. B. Heard horror stories about DIY and just adding Freon without emtying and then recharging the whole system.

Fuses look fine but also been told in the 08 model they dont use fuses or relays but use a TIPM system. However, im sure if that went, other systems in the car would be going haywire as well right?

Any ideas? Suggestions?

Yep, my advice is to take it to someone REPUTABLE that know what they're doing. I've seen a lot of folks screw up a/c that don't know about it. Myself included.

^^^^

I am a cheap cheap person, Like my father and grandfather, Get it done right, In Canada we cannot even purchase 134a without a license. Its cheaper then you might think, I paid $169 for a flush, vacuum, complete ac fill, and dye. Keep in mind this is Canadian pesos, and 134a is probably cheaper in the US

Replacing my compressor clutch myself today

It's going in Thirsday for oil change and AC check. Free check. Idk what theyre going to do but with the cycle switch/clutch replaced already, idk what else there is to check. May be low on freon and not pressurizing enough to kick it on or something else. Idk. See what they say.

This shop is reputable and they work on many PT's over the years. One reason why i chose them. They also knew about the motor mount adjustemnts to 119mm which the other shops i went to never knew about that. So that says something. Since i been going there, i have seen 6 other PT's being repaired there. And 1 which made its maiden voyage to PT heaven. 01 248k. Head gasket blew and engine seized.

But i hope they can fix my AC easily and cheaply cuz if its over $100, im driving without AC. Which will suck in summer.

I have a base model 2006 non-turbo PT
If our cars are similar then this has been my experience:

The radiator fan has 2 speeds.
Both speeds must be operational for the AC to kick in.

I have had to replace my rad fan in order to get the AC working.

I also had frayed and broken wires (twice) in the wiring harness leading to the 2 relays that control the fan.
This caused my AC to not function.
Once repaired the AC was fine.

The rad fan was relatively easy to replace.

The wiring harness is a bit tricky to get out in order to examine it.
It also has some horrible connector clips that are a struggle to open.
When I was repairing it, I posted photos on the forum and the boys here helped me through it!
However once you get the wiring harness out, the repairs are cheap and easy to do.

Good luck cuz there's nothing more fun then driving a PT in the summer!

Thanks for the tip however, rad fan is operational at both speeds. So that is not the issue. Wiring harness is a possibility. I have no idea where to look for that and will have my mechanic do the AC check. If it is the wiring harness, ill look for a guide to fix it. Or if its cheap enough, have them do it. We'll see on thursday. Hope it something simple and cheap.

With the engine cold, start the engine, turn on the A/C. Does the radiator fan come on?

How are determining both fans are working?

The A/C does not turn on at all.

I know the Radiator fan works at both speeds because I can see the fan turning and then once the temp guage reaches the middle the fan turns to high to cool the engine down.
Unless there is another fan you guys are talking about that I am not seeing?

With the engine cold, start the engine, turn on the A/C. Does the radiator fan come on almost immediately?

The reason I asked this question is to find out if the PCM is recognizing that the A/C is signaling the PCM when you turn on the A/C. I am already aware that the radiator fan turns on when the temp guage reaches the middle but what I am asking is with the temp cold does the radiator fan come on with the A/C on?
