Default tailgate issue Im so confused

My tailgate will only open with the key....until once a year when I go up into the mountains a much higher elevation then I can open it by hand like your supposed to. Why is it when I get back to the lower elevations I have to open it with the key again? any ideas? thanks

According to your past posts, you have an '07 Limited.

I can't comment on the elevation issue, why the switch starts working sometimes, it just may be a coincidence. Luckily your PT has the lock cylinder on the rear hatch and you can still open it that way. Later PT's the lock cylinder was removed.

Your touchpad switch has most likely failed, or is in the process of completely failing.

There are several threads on this forum on how to install a separate switch taking the place of the touchpad switch, rather than replace the entire outside emblem/latch assembly.

Here is one and you can use the search feature to find others:

This was the switch I installed on my PT when the touchpad switch failed:

This Dorman switch # 84822 is available at auto parts stores:

It's actually a very easy repair and the type of switch that Chrysler should have used instead of the troublesome touchpad which will eventually fail.

As you get higher up in the mountains the ambient air pressure decreases. This lesser ambient air pressure might allow your hatch latch switch to function, so it probably isn't the RCKEM.
I was getting intermittent function with SOOO BIG's rear hatch latch and just replaced it along with the RCKEM.
That was in Nov. of 2014 and it still functions every time. I'm guessing the replacement rear hatch latch had an upgraded switch. I also replaced the remote control keyless entry module at the same time as portion of the module dedicated to function of the hatch switch was burned out. I learned the hard way, when the switch finally goes it usually goes out in the open position burning out that portion of the module. It seems that your switch has served you so far without burning out the module.

$100.00 plus shipping from a very reasonable Chrysler dealer, Parks Motors, Augusta, Kansas.

Thank You for your help. I took your advice and am putting a new switch in, I had power to the wires when I started but now I don't have power to that wire. I tested the power to the rear wiper just to see if I had a bad ground but that lit up like it was supposed to. Is there a fuse that might have blown...my manual is of little assistance here.
Thank you

The fuse in cavity #10 a 20amp yellow fuse is for the power door locks.

just touch the 2 wires together- what we call bridging the gap... much easier than ringing out for voltage, which may be too low of a signal to show....

My 08 pressure pad just went bad. Bought the switch shown and installed in 1 hour. Hatch opening seems to be more positive. Thanx for the pictures.
