Default 08 PT Cruise with oil residue between upper and lower manifolds???

What does it mean when I found oil between the upper and lower manifolds??

I'm in the process of changing the thermostat and when I removed the upper manifold, there was oil (and pretty thick in a couple of spots) around the "holes" for the gasses.

Help.

Does your Pt Cruiser have the turbo?

No.

Is there / Are there supposed to be gaskets between the two manifold halves?

There is the Intake Manifold Gasket Set sold on Rockauto for under $10... but as far as I know... shouldn't only air be traveling through there?

I think there is another issue if you are getting oil residue there. Has the PCV valve been replaced recently? I don't think that has anything to do with it though...

do you have any pictures ?

There's about a 90% chance that this is from engine blow-by. Pull the intake hose off the throttle body and see if it's really oily. If so, you have your answer. Make sure the PVC hose is not kinked. Changing the PCV valve may help. But it may not. Adding an external PCV vent may help too.

I noticed an oily slime on the intake runners of my 2006 NA PT. [It burns/leaks a quart of oil per oil change]. I changed the PCV valve with a factory valve. Washed and lightly oiled the little foam filter in the air box. Checked the hose.

I think this is normal. It's just the hot oil fumes condensing on the cool intake manifold. [theory]

There are formed 'O ring' gaskets between the intake manifold halves.

Changed the plugs on my 08 PT 77K mi today and noticed the same thing. It uses about 1 to 1 1/2 qt between 3000 mi oil change interval. Nothing seemed wrong with the PCV valve but changed it anyway. Observed no oil in the air box or on the small filter. IIRC, there has always been an oily film inside the intake runners every time it has been disassembled. Maybe just the PCV valve doing its job.

UPDATE:

I have it all back together, now I'm getting a new code I've never seen before:
P1684 "Drive 5 Line 4"

still getting P0304 like always.

Started and ran with ac on high for 10 minutes

Fan doesn't work.

Also, idles real low - to the point of stalling if I leave it in drive.

Just heard a new noise - happy happy - seemed to go away when I turned off the ac. Sort of a but not quite a grinding noise but very intermittent.
