Default How to check Turbo??

Hello all
I have 2 2004 PT cruisers. They are both GT Turbos. The one with 170000 miles runs great and will out run the 2017 Challenger GT. Great power. But my other GT with 125000 miles can bearly get out of it own way. When I pull the air cleaner I can feel and hear the turbo. But it does not have anywhere near the same power. There are no codes that come up. It seems that at higher RPMs I do not hear the turbo like on my other PT. So wondering how I might be able to check the turbo?

Welcome to the forum! When you get a moment go out to the welcome forum and introduce yourself and perhaps show a couple of pictures of your cars.

There are a number of things that can be causing a lack of boost. Restricted exhaust, a clogged catalytic converter, the waste gate stuck in the open position, leaks in the system or a bad turbo itself come quickly to mind.

Both of my PT's are n.a. and it has been a while since I've had any turbos, but, there are plenty of guys around here that do have them and will have plenty of advice as to how to check the vacuum and check for leaks and restrictions on a Cruiser.

Again, welcome to the forum from Pontiac, MI!

I don't own a turbo car, but check the basics, vacuum leak, check for play in the turbo. Has it had a tune up recently?

Thank you for the response. IT will take a couple of days for me to check out those things. As far as tune up I am not really sure when it was done. Just started maintaining the car. Got it from my Dad who can no longer drive.

A simple cause of the car not having power when you think the turbo should be spooling up is often a boost leak. Instead of getting to the engine, it leaks out through holes, loose clamps, etc. The reason that I would doubt this is your problem is the sound. The turbo would still spool up and make noise and if it is massive, you can often hear the leak.

it can really be thousands of things. i would first start with a boost system pressure test. you need a special tool kit with all the sized adapters and know what you're doing. spray down with soap.
install a boost gauge. see if there is any turbo action when the engine is loaded.

So far I have checked for vacuum leaks( Did not find any), I checked my cat and that is ok. When I had the exhaust disconnected I stopped hearing the turbo at about 2200 rpm. I am thinking that it could be the waste gate. I will get a boost gauge with in a couple of weeks to really test. Thank you for all of the input. Hopefully I will get this solved.
