Default AC Quit, no clutch engagement, no cooling fan

Greetings,

Suddenly today the AC doesn't work on my 05 Cruiser. It worked fine just the other day. The car has 225,000 miles and the AC system is original to the car. The system seems to have good pressure (from my cheapo AC filler gauge that I use on my old truck.) The AC clutch is not engaging. Neither is the engine cooling fan.

Reading the forums, I tried jumping the low pressure switch, but no clutch action. I checked the ac fuses. Also checked the high speed fan relay just for fun. Can't find anything wrong.

Not completely sure what to check next. Wondering if the compressor has just expired! In that case I will need to go with 465 air conditioning (4 windows open, 65 MPH!)

Thanks!

Is your engine light on? If so what codes?

Have you checked the ground wires going to the fenders?

No check engine light or codes.

I will try to examine the wiring this weekend... although I have never had any electrical issues with this car before.

Thanks!

Given the nature of the issues you explained, I would immediately suspect a fuse and or relay. It is possible that the control itself in the dash is broken. When you turn it on, does the blower inside the car turn on?

If all that checks out, I'd grab a multi meter, say a quick prayer and start tracing the wiring.

This may help.

Good luck!

The blower works fine; turns on and blows air when I move it to the AC position. Usually when in this position, the cooling fan also engages and the compressor kicks in. Those two things aren't happening anymore!

I would check that the radiator fan is working properly. Run the car with AC off and blower off. When the temp gauge gets to ~half way, the low speed should kick in, then the high speed should kick in a few minutes later.

Also, from a 2001 Sebring diagram there is an 'AC compressor relay' located in the Power Distribution Center. And a 40 A compressor clutch fuse.

"If all that checks out, I'd grab a multi meter, say a quick prayer and start tracing the wiring."

I did! And what you said about a quick prayer reminded me of a poem by G.K. Chesterton:

You say grace before meals.
All right.
But I say grace before the play and the opera,
And grace before the concert and pantomime,
And grace before I open a book,
And grace before sketching, painting,
Swimming, fencing, boxing, walking, playing, dancing;
And grace before I dip the pen in the ink.

(And before I work on the PT Cruiser!!)

It's working again!

Found a broken wire at the ac compressor connector. I'm betting the wire was stressed when, um, the "mechanic" changed the timing belt back in March. Oops. Next time the "mechanic" will make sure to disconnect that connector, if there is a next time.

Thanks to all of you. Cruise on!

Glad you found a broken wire and got your A/C going. Can you tell us which wire it was?

It was the two-wire connector going into the back of the compressor. There was a blue wire and a brown wire. The blue one was broken, the brown one severely chafed and about to break, about an inch out of the connector. They must have hung up on something when I changed the timing belt. So I spliced both of them back together.

Thanks
