Default P0456 code, won't start, battery seems fine

All,

The short story is I have a 2003 PT Cruiser Limited. I just bought the car at 140,000. (I have 2 other PT Cruisers!) The car was running really well. The check engine light came on. I have a code reader that said it was a P)$%^ ...I mean a P0456 code. I cleared it and it came back. Cleared it again and I followed advice from this forum and looked at the gas cap. Seemed fine, still need to put vaseline around seal or get a new gas cap.

However, in the meantime, the car won't start! The battery seems fine, all electrical stuff is fully functional. Thought it might be a low battery, tried jumping it from another car, no luck.

Additionally, the remote battery went dead and I believe this car has some sort of kill switch on it. I changed the battery in the remote. The car unlocks but still won't start.

Any ideas of where to look next?

Does the engine crank?

If no crank, what is the battery voltage when you are trying to crank the engine?

If it does crank, have you checked for fuel?

Remove the air box and check the grounds on the driver side fender. If they're okay, remove and clean both battery cables and posts. Sometimes it's just that there's a dirty or loose connection.

Please elaborate about "the car won't start".

When you engage the starter does the engine spin?
Does it just click?
Does it do nothing?

Thanks for the replies!

Engine doesn't spin. Turn key and it just makes a click sound. Radio works, all electrical works.

After work tonight I thought it might be the kill switch so I tried something I researched on youtube to reset kill switch. Put hazards on, turn ignition on, watch kill switch light turn off, then continue turning car on. No luck. Not the kill switch that I can tell.

I took off the airbox so I could take of the positive terminal. Reconnected positive terminal after about 10 seconds. No start.

The original P0456 code was about the evap system. Research on the forum says first thing is to put thin coat of vaseline on gas cap. Did that, no change.

In the morning, maybe I'll take battery completely out and check connections to the fender. Will also try and locate switch to turn kill switch off. This a car I recently bought, kill switch was already installed. A side note, the alarm does work.

Thanks!

I would suggest having a battery load test done.

Check the battery terminals for good contacts and check the battery fluid levels.

Does the battery voltage go down when you are trying to start it?

Thanks, will have to get a meter to check the last part but I just checked the terminals and battery fluid, everything seems good.

Don't you think that even if something was going on with the battery I should have been able to jump start connected to another car?

The starter is isn't even trying to turn just a click and that's it.

"The starter is isn't even trying to turn just a click and that's it."

Suggestions:

Check all fuses (assume you have already!)

Stick a jump lead from the bonnet latch (that's the hood latch in Americanglish ) to the engine block - this will by pass any dodgy earthing - try again

Get under and waggle the starter lead good and hard - try again

Hit the starter a couple of times with a club hammer (seriously) - could be just sticky
