Default Completely Stumped on Cooling System

Hey guys,

I have been trying to chase down an overheating problem for 2 weeks now and I'm $300 in the hole and stumped! At first, the old radiator fan died, so I put in a new one and replaced the blown fuse. Car drove OK for a week. Then, this weekend it started overheating. I replaced the low and the high speed fan relays to no avail. Here's the kicker: When I have the A/C turned on, the engine temp stays at about 200 degrees in city and highway driving and while idling. I can hear the cooling fan running.

But when I turn the A/C off, the temperature immediately starts climbing, I usually turn the car off before it gets beyond 220. The cooling fan will not run in low or high speed mode. If I turn the A/C back on at this point, the compressor and everything runs, but the radiator fan will not re start.

I am completely clueless as to where to go from here.

To recap:
Car overheats with A/C off. Fan won't run.
Car runs at normal temp with A/C on. Fan runs.

Replaced:
Radiator fan
Low speed relay
High speed relay
Fan fuse
Topped off coolant jug and radiator.

Thanks!

Fan is a two speed, low speed (No AC on or DEFROST)
If it is a 05 or lower ther are three connections in the harness
It could be the low speed 12 volt pin is damaged due to heat
which melts the plastic in the harness connector and make for a loose
connection and the fan not running.
Pu;; the connector apart and inspect for brown/black over heated plastic around one of the pins
The center pin on my prius fan connector was loode- heat damaged and stopped both low and high speeds from working.

Just one suggestion.
A friend of mine had a similar problem with his Chrysler Van yesterday. Last year he had his radiator and electric fans replaced. Keep in mind that his Van is an 05 with 100,000 miles on it. Things wear out.
Yesterday he told me his water temperature gauge indicated overheating. Complacently, he was going to simply top off his anti freeze that had depreciated in the reservoir. I told him to have his trusted mechanic check it out this morning.
He did and in doing so saved the engine which would have completely overheated in time.
The mechanic discovered the water pump was bad and needed replacing.

Radiator fan won't run

I see you started another thread on the same issue.

Did you check both fuses? Fuse #12 & Fuse #5 ?

Diagram is for a 2001 Pt Cruiser - 1st generation

Schematic-2001-PT-Cruiser.jpg

Black - Ground
Yellow - High
Dark Green - Low

The diagram also shows both fuses. Check both fuses.

I did check both. I started a new thread because it's a slightly different issue now. When the A/C is on, the fan runs normally as it should, cycling on and off with the compressor. As soon as I turn off the A/C, the fan will not run at all, regardless of how hot the engine gets. If I turn the A/C back on at that point, the fan will not run and the computer turns off the compressor to avoid overheating the engine. I am completely baffled.

Have you checked the wiring going to the engine coolant temperature sensor and the sensor itself? That sensor tells the computer to turn on the radiator fan when the coolant temperature goes above a specific temperature to keep the engine cool.

Is your engine light on? If so what codes?

I have not, where is the sensor located?

I don't think it's the sensor though because I'm getting a live temperature readout through my scan tool and the temp gauge on the dash is working properly.

No check engine light on and no pending codes.

Have you tried with the engine off, remove the low speed fan relay, start the engine and see if the high speed comes on almost immediately. This will tell you if your radiator fan circuit is okay and should trigger P1490.

I will try this tonight, thanks for thee great suggestion! This should also help me clarify what is high speed and what is low.

I tried pulling the low speed relay. As soon as I started the engine, the CEL came on with the code you mentioned, however, the high speed fan did not come on! When I replaced the relay and cleared the codes, neither the low or the high would come on.

An important clue, to be sure, but I do not know what it all means. Ideas? Both the low and high speed relays are brand new, just got them yesterday.
