Default Liftgate not working with key.

I have a 2006 pt cruiser that doesn't have the button under the latch. The remote key use to unlock the trunk. All of sudden that stopped one day. I open the back by inserting my key and holding the key while I open the door. It was suggested to me to get a rear hatch sensor at Napa but they said they didn't sell that or know what I was talking about.

You can install a bypass switch, a lot of us have already done it.

I don't have a hatch release button on mine. It's just suppose to open with the key button but that stopped working so now I have to use the key manually to open the hatch door. I have a keyhole instead of the hatch release button.

When you did use the remote to open the door, after you pressed the remote button to unlock the rear hatch, would you then reach under the winged emblem on the rear hatch and pull on the hatch and it would open?

If so, you may not think that there is a "button" under there, but there actually is and that is what triggers the rear hatch latch mechanism to unlatch and you can then open the hatch.

If you reach under the handle assembly, run your fingers along the surface on the back of the wings (not on the car side). You should feel a slight "bump" in the plastic. That's the touchpad switch that triggers the latch assembly to open the hatch. That switch can go bad and therefore does not send the signal to the latch assembly to open.

You can then refer to the other threads about installing a different switch to take the place of the failed switch.

After 11 years and 96,000 miles, the squeezy plastic electro-switch under the liftgate emblem on my 2008 is beginning to fail. I wonder if the junior Chrysler engineer who designed this did an MTBF analysis. Fortunately, my 2008, built in 9/2007, still has a key, so I can open the liftgate manually....
