Default Getting a Rebuild Title

Hey guys!!

So my wife got in a minor fender bender in her Chevy last week. Don't worry, she's fine.

The only damage to her car was a bend in the hood and the latch is jammed shut so the hood won't open. But, because it's an older car with higher mileage and a dent or two, insurance wants to total it >.<

We are weighing our options. If we keep the car, we can only get liability insurance, not full coverage like we have now.

Is it possible to get a rebuild title? How would one do this/what's the cost?

Probably different in each state, In PA you must submit good title to state to get paid by insurance and receive "PA Salvaged Title" in return. Now you inform insurance co that you want to to purchase the vehicle off them reducing the amount of the total $ received. You then repair the vehicle and the state requires you to take it to an "Enhanced Inspection Station" to receive a special inspection to receive a 'Reconstructed Title" if it passes, cost is approximately $400 the inspection that it is considered road worthy.
Search your state DOT web site for details on totals or reconstructed requirements.

I believe CT is similar for cars. But for motorcycles, a certified person must inspect the frame. And the bike frame must be stripped down for him to inspect it. And sign off on it.

You can find out what is required by your state, usually, by going to the web site of what ever state department issues licenses plates.

Depending on what needs to be done, in MI this can required more than a few hoops to jump through to upgrade from a 'Salvage' title to a 'Rebuilt Salvage' title to get the vehicle plated again. Good luck!

Are you sure you need to do anything? You can always just fix the car and not get the insurance company involved.

What is the estimated cost of repairs and the current value of the vehicle? I have always kept the cost of repairs below the value of my vehicles to keep my vehicles. It is more complicated if your insurance gets involved. For me its the other vehicles that keeps hitting my vehicles.

They estimated the damage at $1900, because there's a couple other minor blemeshes on the car not related to the wreck. Value is around $1,900. I kinda feel like I'm being screwed.

Opinion: Should I just cut my losses, drive it for a month, junk it And use my tax refund to get a newer car?

Your asking for an opinion without giving any details. Car? Damage? Can you fix things?

Can you easily fix the car? If yes, tell them you'll take a little less money if you can keep the car.

I would fight the value of the car. Try to see if the same vehicle same year you have is for sale on the website for more than what the insurance company is estimating it is worth.

If they don't listen you might have some luck filing a complaint.
