post a picture of where it fell in... and there is of course zero chance of a spare in the bag with the owners manual, right? in the compartment under the passenger seat? or the jack compartment in the rear? it would really help to know where exactly it fell...

One of these would help:

In the future, get some spare keys and have them programmed. 2 keys with remotes cost me less than $30 on ebay and I know a very fair locksmith who cut them and programmed them for $50. The going rate for programming them is closer to $100 and a dealer will charge a couple hundred each.

The first time, he cut 4 and programmed 3 for $75. Last year, he cut 2 and programmed them for $50

Sorry about this. It will be a pain to recover them.
You will need to remove the top dash panel to access the defroster duct.
Then if lucky, dropping a magnet at the end of a cord into the duct will attract and hold and you will be able to carefully pull out the key (keys and ring?).

Others on this site can detail the panel removal steps.

If the keys fell in too deep, recovery may require removing the heater box.

Thanks, the guy we bought it from was supposed to give us the spare and never did, so I'll definitely get some made.

None of that, previous owner only gave us the 1 key.

They tried a coat hanger and magnets, couldn't find them.

Pics won't post. It fell in the vent that's on top of the radio, near the glass.

Demist. Your grille must be broken.

the dash top is easy to remove

Pull the door seals away from the top of the window to the bottom of the dash

Pull the A-pillar cladding on each side *in towards the centre of the car* and the clips should free. Remove the cladding pieces.

Pull the dash top towards you and lift it clear - the vents now open and you should be able to hook around for your keys.

If you cant find them, search the forum for removing the glove box and lower dash - the vent ends up in the fan ultimatley, so you might find the keys in taht if you take the ducting off.

Keys are almost always brass (non-magnetic).
They use brass because:
1. it's easy to cut
2. it's a somewhat "slippery" and soft metal that minimizes wear on the lock pins

If the key had a split-ring attached, the rings are usually steel and magnetic. (But it probably wouldn't have gone down the hole if it had a ring attached.)

Once you get the dash top off, if you can spot the key, you might be able to retrieve it with a 3-prong grabber, or use some sticky tape (sticky side exposed) on the end of a stick.

Good luck.
