Default Camshaft Seal at sensor

Hy Guys,

The car started bucking when I hit the accelerator yesterday, but continued to run fine as log as I did not attempt to accelerate quickly. It still runs but must take it very easy.

I pulled a 0340 code so I bought a new camshaft position sensor. When I took of the old one, there was engine oil in the magnet cavity. Any input on the following questions will be appreciated as usual:

1) Is there an oil seal on the camshaft to keep oil out of the magnet housing? The only reference in my manuals I can find about camshaft seals is the one on the camshaft sprocket side.

2) There is a seal on the position sensor itself. Is this to keep oil from leaking out, or is it just to keep dirt out of the magnet housing?

3) I have done a little research and it seems magnetic hall effects sensors are used in oil environments regularly. Anyone else have any expertise?

I can just put it back together and see how it goes, but a little mure understanding is always better.

I just replaced my camshaft sensor a few weeks ago and as far as I could tell the only seal is the one that's on the sensor. The sensor had oil on it but it's a sealed unit.

Thanks for the reply. I understand the sensor is epoxy sealed, did you have motor oil in the magnet cavity?

The seal is a green "O" ring if I remember correctly maybe black that seals and keeps the oil with in the camshaft cavity. Its not very big. There is also a magnet in the cavity of the cam to make the hall effect. two screws hold it in.
Make sure the magnet is not cracked, its a plastic housing so don't over tighten it, but it shouldn't be lose either, clean any dirt off the magnet before reassamble

P0340 - No Camshaft Position Sensor Circuit Failure Conditions:

Possible Causes:

1. Camshaft Position Sensor connector is damaged, open or it is shorted
2. Camshaft Position Sensor signal circuit is open or shorted to ground or to battery voltage or 5 volt circuit
3. Camshaft Position Sensor 5 volt circuit is open or shorted to ground or to battery voltage
4. Camshaft Position Sensor ground circuit is open
5. Camshaft Position Sensor is damaged or has failed
6. PCM has failed

Always check the wiring and connectors going to the Camshaft sensor first.
