Default Engine has rod knock

Was on my way home from Wisconsin Sunday night when I noticed a knocking sound getting louder and louder. I stopped and checked the oil, two quarts low!!! Filled it back up but it was still knocking very loud, oil light never came on.
I had no choice but to keep driving another 70 miles to get home. I will check this weekend to see if it can be saved or if it's done for. Meanwhile I get to drive my dad's 2008 300 Heritage Edition until I figure out what do.

Ehhhhh, it's a 15 year old vehicle. I'd suggest you check the oil once a week. Hell, my car isn't even 2 years old yet and I check it weekly. Just a habit I picked up from my Dad as a kid growing up in the 70's, I guess.

drive it until the engine seizes, and then get another $1000 car. not worth fixing.
did you take the car to a mechanic to make sure it's an internal engine problem and not something else

Goonior's got a goner. Fifteen years ago my freebee Supreme had a bad cam. Had a bunch of miles so I decided just to replace the whole engine. $325 and 1/3 the miles. Couldn't have replaced the cam for that. Still is my good car and doesn't use any oil.

FWIW, the oil pressure indicator lights on these cars are a joke. By the time they legitimately indicate an oil pressure problem, you've likely already done irreparable damage to your bearings. Luckily, I'd say ~99% of all "my oil pressure light is on" cases with PTs simply indicate that the oil pressure switch is faulty and needs replacing.

I have read this about the oil light before pertaining to the PT Cruiser. There is no substance to any reasonable facts about the previous comment and also looking at the any PT Cruiser wire diagram it is also unreasonable. LOL

One thing that most that modded a PT cruiser know well is that the oil pump was actually to much for the 2.4 and Chrysler had to even use a restriction in later block to limit oil going to the head.

So if what was said true about the oil light not only would you hear tappet noise long before any remaining oil would cause "black death" of any crank or rod bearing most would have the common sence (you would think???) to shut off the engine.

Jerry I am sure the shop guys at that shop you use to visit and work at would tend to agree with my last comment as you would if you worked on enough 2.4 Chrysler engines??? Maybe not? FYI I talked to them a few times.

Just to let everyone know. I started it "ONE LAST TIME" to move it up about 10 feet and the rod let loose. The engine is, at this time, a boat anchor . I am still undecided about what I want to do at this point. I may try to rebuild it or get another engine for it IDK. The weather is finally starting to improve in Chicago and now that I have a new job where I will have afternoons (working 6am to 230pm), weekends free and making more money to boot I may pull this thing and see how much damage, if any, may have been done to the block. I know a lot of you out there may feel it's not worth it, but at the same time I feel a responsibility to treat this one right after the rough life it's had so far.

it makes more sense to dump your car and get another identical model with lower miles and that has been well cared for. you would save time, effort, money and come out ahead with a parts car.
