Default Food for Thot - Broken Timing Belt Observations

Hello everyone,
My Timing Belt snapped last week. I've replaced it since then, but something interesting happened before it broke.

I noticed weeks (if not a month or more), that every time I revved past 3500rpm that the engine would surge or buck but no acceleration past the speed I was going at the time.

My theory is that the belt was stretched and therefore throwing the timing off. My delusion is that if your car begins to behave this way (bucking or surging), then your timing belt may be stretched and is about ready to break.

Before mine snapped I'm pretty sure I could hear the belt slapping against the timing cover
