Default Marine power 454 tbi

Hey guys

Working on my boat. Iíve got twin 454 marine power tbi freshwstsrbcooled motors

One motor runs great!

Other motor was running rough. Then next day wouldnít start Put number one cylinder on tdc checked rotor in distributor and it was off one spot. Moved everything around. Started up. Stalling. Not reving as fast as other engine

Comp test between 125 and 150

If I unplug the map sensor it idles like a dream
Still wonít rev fast like other motor
Swapped map sensors no change
Swapped ecu no change

Any ideas?

whats the engine's compression ratio ? 125 to 150 is too low from what I've seen on modern V8 engines. you should see 200 on an engine with low to no wear.

I really doubt compression is the problem....

This will take some diagnostic work to figure it out. I think you will find a electrical and not mechanical problem needing resolved.

Sorry you are on the far end of the world...the other side of the states or I might know someone that could help you but everyone into boats is on the west coast.

What is the comp test on the motor that runs great?

Check the simple things first. You know the compression is enough to start it if you have sufficient fire and fuel. What color is the spark on the plugs? If it's kind of an orange-yellow, then you have an ignition problem. It should be a nice blue-white color. If it isn't, try swapping the coils from the good running one. If the spark is okay, check the fuel delivery. Did you do a wet or dry compression test on it?

Tps fixed the stalling and rough idle. I can. Now run it with the map sensor hooked up. But itís still slow to rev

I'd check fuel pressure then pull the distributor to check bottom gear and make sure the roll pin is still in one piece and the gear isn't worn or loose.
If it gets really bad does it have a pickup coil\? I had one go bad years ago and when vacuum pulled the advance it would open circuit and motor would
start to shut down, vacuum would then release advance and motor would jump to life.
It shook so bad I thought motor mounts were broken. -- Head gaskets blew before I figured out the problem. Could have been a cheap fix, could have been...

boats are weird for normal car people to diagnose as we ofter forget things like one rotates in the opposite direction and all timing components do as well. i'd start with making sure everything is accurately/backwardsly set timing wise and plug wire routing wise and go from there.

Iím not sure what a roll pin is

Fuel pressure sound be good. Both high and low pressure pumps are brand new

I just took her out for the first spin. I love her

Mainship 40 sedan bridge

The bad motor runs 175 temp when Iím on it

The good motor rock solid 150
Bad motor still slow to rev Swapped injectors same thing

I think itís timing. But I do t have a lot of knowledge on these
