Default Old Head Gasket Looks So-So?

We were getting air into the system and overheating, so I finally decided to do the head gasket.

I just got it off, and looking at it, it doesn't look obviously busted, although it is pretty gnarly in general. Could it still be the source of the problem?

I suppose I only have one option any way: install new HG and hope for best.

But I am hoping that is going to be the fix.

thx

You don't re-use a none metal head gasket. Replace the used head gaskit gasket.

Based on what you have posted IMO it is not the head gasket.

My last two head gasket failures (honda & olds) were caused by aluminum head corrosion bypassing the gasket. Just replacing the gasket wouldn't be enough.

What do you do about aluminum corrosion?

Usually the head is replaced but I'm cheap and own a heliarc welder so I welded and machined (wood router) the pits flush.
Did you ever do a leak down test?

I replaced a head gasket on a 2.5 Mopar. The cast iron block surface had little corrosion and cleaned up nicely. The aluminum head was pitted. I brought it to a machine shop, the owner said it looked normal for a 125,000 mile engine. He machined it flat, giving it a smooth finish. Lasted another 10 years. A good machinist has experienced more than the average Joe.

OK, thanks for info.

After researching, I can say neither the head nor block surfaces are corroded/pitted.

I cleaned the heck out of them and installed gasket. Hoping for best.

(No machine shop around here... Napa wanted ~$500 for a reman head.)
