Default Transmission Problem

This weekend we made a road trip about 3 hours from home(which with detours and such became a 5 hour drive). The drive there was fine other than the overheating gremlins popping up when we stopped moving( a problem I've been tracking for months).

We got there, no issues. Next morning drove around town for about an hour.. No issues.. Decided time to go home(detour was gone). Got the edge of town, made a 30 second stop at a park entrance(a national park we had to drive thru to get home), drove about 20 feet and it was like the transmission disconnected. The engine reved but no go.We managed to roll the car to a safe spot.

To save dragging the story out, at this point, if you start the car, put it in drive but don't touch the gas, it will move at least a bit under its own power. If you give it too much gas, it will " disconnect" again. But immediately you can shut the car off, restart it, drop into drive and you have the "idle drive" again.

I was able.to get a shop.to do a scan. No check engine light. The codes retrieved:
P0846
P0731
P0706
P1790

So far things point to the solenoid pack, but I want to be sure as I don't have money to waste on a mistaken diagnosis.

Any input on this problem is appreciated

Dumb question, I know, did you check the fluid level?

Check this site. It gives suggestions including reprogramming the computer.

Solenoid replacement isn't that difficult. It's much easier if you remove the battery and battery tray, however. Just make sure if you get one from a salvage yard that it has CLEAN fluid in it when you remove it and not burnt fluid. I did that once and overlooked the fluid color and had to go back and get another one. Nobody to blame but myself.

Well.. Change of events tonight...
Got home from work, started the car, dropped it into drive with foot on the break.. Drive works flawlessly! Let it get warmed up.. Flawless...

BUT...

No reverse whatsoever!

How does this happen? Go from one problem to that problem working fine now but a different problem now?

My head hurts from scratching it too much...

Thanks for the input.. I will check that website out and as far as parts, I work for a major Auto parts chain so I get a good deal on parts.

I took the chance and took the car out of my driveway to see what it would do. Long story short, there is park, neutral and 1st.. that's it. If it's in drive, it will rev up 1st gear and then when it goes to shift.. nothing..the engine just revs. It can be driven with the shifter in 1st you can drive until it gets to the "screaming for mercy" stage.

My wife and I are going to discuss what we will do... it's a tough call... we have a lot of $$ into this car already and if it winds up being an R and R, were looking at about $2500 cdn, and by the homework I have done, that's a smoking deal.... but... we can buy another Cruiser from a local reputable dealer for about $2800... so... we'll see...

Did you try resetting the codes and see what new codes it is triggering?

I did clear the codes.. both with a scanner and disconnecting the battery, but my code reader only ever gives me a code P0700, which is just a generic code.

After speaking to the transmission shop about my findings, they are about 80% sure it will be a rebuild situation. So after talking it over with my wife, it looks like we will be probably selling the Cruiser as is to get whatever we can for it and just go with one vehicle for now.
