Default Abs-trac-and brake lights

My brother is complaining about the ABS, TRAC, annd red brake lights on in our '01 LE with 187 K. He said that out of nowhere a few weeks ago the ABS and trac lights have come on and have stayed on. However, the red brake light seems to come on intermittently, like if he goes over a bump or something. Driving around the brakes feel normal and the parking brake holds as it should.

I have to tackle this soon because the PT is due for inspection in September. My question is where do I start? I don't have an ABS capable scan tool, but I'm sure I could get access to one if needed.

I'd start by checking the connectors to the tone rings on the wheels. If they're clean and tight, check the tone rings for cracks. As for the brake light, check the fluid and the connector on the master cylinder.

Just fixed her 05 abs / trac light
It was the front abs sensor..Had a new timing belt
put on ,and the mechanic scanned it..verified which wheel ...no charge on the scan ...
Pretty much impossible without a scan tool..

Got a code scanner with ABS capabilities and got codes relating to right rear sensor. Tone rings are nice and clean. Got car inspected and cleared codes before inspection and passed. The ABS and trac lights came on immediately but the red brake light was off. As long as the red brake light is off you can pass inspection in Mass. Haven't fixed yet and not sure if my brother is interested in fixing soon.

Cool Re: Abs-trac-and brake lights

The sensor isn't too bad to change out. they are about 50 bucks from RockAuto

rear wheel abs sensor

might be able to get one at the junk yard...

Ugh. Wanted to work on it today while my brother was out. Too bad he took the keys even though he didn't drive and I can't find the spare.
