Default Decision time for my 04

20190628_100654.jpg

Got rear-ended a few months ago. Finally heard back from the insurance co and they want to total it for $3200. I will have an option to buy it back - just waiting to hear on what that will be.
Mechanically, the car is still sound. I have driven over 4kmiles since the accident. Most estimates I have got put it at over $2500 for repairs although I think I could probably do most if it myself for a lot cheaper. The vanilla white pt is pretty common in my area junk yards.
Question I have - The rear hatch wont open - looks like the latch mech is pushed in. Would that be a difficult issue to fix??

TIA

All of the latch mechanism itself is built into the rear hatch. That replacement mechanism would be in one you'd find in a salvage yard. Your photo shows that's really been torn up. But that should fix that issue.

But of greatest importance is the bar centered on the bottom lower rear hatch opening that secures the lock down. If that hasn't been displaced and the rear quarters aren't damaged, you may decide, as the photo seems to show, that it's be smart to buy it back after the insurance settlement and fix it yourself. It'd be mostly bolt on.

Price out the cost of a salvage yard rear hatch, possibly a salvage yard replacement rear bumper backer and either hope to find a salvage yard cover or order order one of the cheaper replacement rear bumper covers.
If you do all the salvage yard roaming and all the bolt on and just have those parts repainted, I think you'll come out well ahead of the buy back.

I did a complete parts off reincarnation on SOOO BIG. That included a lot more work that it appears you need. Again only if the rear quarters and that area around that hold down bar aren't damaged
It appears that there's been no rear quarter damage and the impact seems to be centered on the rear hatch and bumper cover.
To give you an idea of what's behind the damage, I've included a few small photos from the parts off work on SOOO BIG.
As you can't open your hatch, one photo of the open area of SOOO BIG's rear hatch.
Good luck. Happy PTin', ptprice

Thanks ptprice . Yard around my area has an 05 hatch and bumper - same color for $250. There is no damage to the rear quarters or tail lights. I was hit right in the middle. There is a crease in the center support bar (hold down bar?) behind the bumper but I think I can pull that out

A 2005 hatch will not work. Chrysler changed the striker part on the chassis of the car when they went to the electric hatch mechanism in 2005. I did a write up this several years ago. I don't think you can change out the electric mechanism for a mechanical one either if I remember right. Might be able to the switch the striker but I think the bolt pattern may be different. You will need to compare them closely.

PS: Here's the link to what I found. You should read this whole thread.

Rear hatch interchange???

negotiate an extra $500 for the buy out, use that cash to buy a better condition pt cruiser.

contact an injury lawyer and wait a year, should get $10000 for whiplash and back injuries as that seems like a huge hit.

In California there is a law where you dont need to give them three estimates. Only one is required.

If you can keep the car and if the car is drivable I would suggest keeping the Pt Cruiser and get has much cash as you can unless you wont drive it the way it is.

I had a pickup truck that got hit three times. ( all three accidents were the other persons fault.) I got cash all three times for repairs but did not do the repairs. I paid 11,000 for the truck when it was two years old. 20 years later I sold it for 1500. I didn't feel like replacing ignition switch, CAT, all tires rotted out, etc. Total amount I got from the three accidents came to 9,600.

If you have the time drag it as you can. They will eventually want to close the case quickly and go wth a reasonable deal. Don't lsten to the other party at all. Friend of nine didnt wait and he got a bad deal not waitng it out.

Bumper reinforcement was a lot cheaper than I expected. I think I will keep the PT. It still drives well apart from not being able to open the rear hatch. Also its been pretty reliable.
