Default Charging Problems

I had the battery light come on about 2 months ago, it was intermittent.
Had charging system checked by 2 auto parts stores...both couldn't really figure it out as it would pass, then fail. So I had the alternator replaced...along with both belts.

A week later the problem came back, along with some ECM warnings from my UltraGauge.

A little back info...old alternator.
I would see Volts from 13.00's to 15.08 and never got a warning.
New alternator
Volts are around 14.08 to 14.80. I'll get a UG warning of
ECM Voltage Warning 14.90.

Started the car today & battery light came on & volts were in the 12's.
Restated car & volts were in the 14's. I drove it for 2 hours with 4 stops & all was normal.

This week I've seen no warnings, I also don't have any codes.
I checked the ground wires on both fenders & all are good.

I'm at a loss on what to check for next.

while idling...watch voltage carefully....turn on head light high beam, brake lights, and turn AC full...might as well turn interior light and radio on as well...

Report your voltage...

Hi LionPt,
If you plan to sell the generator ( alternator) please let me know. I might want to buy it from you.

I totally agree with NitroPt. Only one other idea would be to check the wiring from and to the alternator. One of the wires might be bare next to ground touching somewhere.

I have heard from other members that only if you tighten the alternator too tight or put to many amps on it will fail for the most part. Sometimes I have to keep tightening the belt for days until it barely sqeels. I am deaf so I have my wife listen to it. I learned a lot from NitroPt and Rob about alternators and battery amps.

I have heard nightmare alternator stories about removing the alternator.

Every day for years NitroPt keeps telling everyone diagnose the problem to death before replacing parts. I call NitroPt ( actually my wife ) maybe once a year if I can't figure it out myself. The only parts I replace is sensors, radiator fan (not my PtCruiser) only my wife becuz she uses the A/C All the time, etc. Common part failures. Both Pt Cruisers have 110 to 125 thousand miles on them.

My daughter hates Pt Cruisers and she drives like a race car driver. I bought her a used Lexus ( took me four months to find a good engine in one of them.). I hate working on cars after working on them for 60 years. Still no problems after a year. Previous owner only takes it to a Lexus dealer for repairs.

I forgot I also replace the CAT every two years. Bad bad bad design with the CAT too close to the engine. Took the head off to replace belt etc etc and no burning until 2 months later. CAT gets too hot and overheats the engine head and the PCM. Having PCM problems since 40 thousand miles on one of the Pt Cruisers but refuse to replace it because the same problem might come back again. Can't drive that Pt Cruiser in hot weather.

Report your voltage...

I will do this later today.

I just got back from another trip out, 20 min. each way.
No battery light, but I got an ECM warning of 15.01 sitting at a stop light on the way home.

I have a similar problem with the 2007 PtCruiser. I ignore it for 5 years now. That Pt Cruiser also has the bad PCM I refuse to replace.
NitroPT likes this.

Ok, just did this...
At idle. parking lights, fog lights, A/C, radio, door open, dashcam...stayed in the 14's

High beams, 14's for about 20 seconds, battery light came on, volts dropped to 12.8-13. I did this 3 times, the 1st 2 the results were the same, the 3rd time I got a spike in voltage to 15.

What exactly is the age and status of the battery? Pull the pos after starting...check volts from post to terminal.

Battery was bought 1/25/16...most likely close to end of life.

I thought you shouldn't pull the pos in a computer car..??

Ok, perhaps. But what a good shop does is tests the battery before yoinking a alternator...unless it is a premium high dollar battery, it only lasts 2-3 years. 4-5 is what i expect for a top dollar unit, which is what i got out of the top dollar one in ours- no, not a light weight deal either...i get the 100 minute 650ah one that weighs 100lbs.
The old alt can be bench tested at any auto store....
Edit- p.o.s....oops
Pps... i pulled mine while running...the computer shouldnt care, just dont run full accessory load while doing the test..the alt may not like it for very long.

Only a *guess at this point but it really points to a PCM?

I can say if you keep spiking to 15 volts you are going to cook your battery...

*guess: estimate or suppose (something) without sufficient information to be sure of being correct.
