Default Jack stand question

I was wondering if when you put your car up on jack stands if you jack 1 side of the car at a time or jack it from somewhere under the middle crossmember? Looked in the manual and chiltons book and they show you the jacking points on the side of the car. There is nothing about under the car to raise the whole front end at the same time.

Don't know on front. I did rear with floor jack on beam axle - but I put a 2x6 piece between jack and beam so I minimized risk of bending beam axle.

Gonzo,

You don't want to get under the PT with one jack holding it up, or do you intend on putting a jack stand on each side after you lift the whole front end? I don't think there's really a surdy place under the front to get the whole car up.

From the question it appears that you are wanting to get the entire car off of the ground to do smoething. If that is the case, I have used my rhino ramps to get the front off. I then did something similar to quicksilverdon description. Then placed jack stand and other support under the car so that I could work on it.

From what I gathered, I think he's only trying to get the front end jacked up. The question, so I think, is whether it's safe to use a jackstand on one side as a fulcrum while you're actively jacking up the other side (presumably to put a jackstand under it, as well).

And actually...I'm kinda curious myself!

CB GT,
You hit the nail on the head. I have rhino ramps and they are great. But I'm thinking of doing my own brakes and was wondering if the whole front end should be jacked up and both jackstands installed. The reason is so I could use the other side as a blueprint

Front brakes are easy. I know what you are saying as far
as a blueprint is,but don't think you will need it.It's not like the drum brakes. No springs or parking brake to worry about.
I did mine and if I can do it so can you.

in a perfect world you would have 2 floor jacks and jackstands.
I only have one jack. what i do is put one side on the jackstand at its lowest position, then do the other side to working height, go back and raise the first side. Sometimes when lowering the jackstand may lift up a little so lower slowly and observe the stands. When i first got my jack i wasnt used to how fast it released, the saddle popped off the rail and pushed in the floorpan. Rubber mallet and dolly fixed that one up right away but it sucked nonetheless.

Agree completely.
If you want to raise both, my concern would be side movement when you go to do 2nd side with first side on a stand - be sure you're level, on solid ground, and do what RallyDRock says - lowest setting on first, then raise again.
