Default Rack and pinion vs?

Ok, finally took the car in today to have the rack and pinion replaced. My loaner car gave me quite a scare. It was a 2002 Dodge Stratus. I immediately noticed something different when I was driving but couldn't figure it out. It drove "funny." Then when I got on the interstate I could really tell the difference. I barely move the wheel and the car would almost swerve off the road!

SO my question is this: what is the difference between rack and pinion and "the other steering"?

There's also worm and roller - rack and pinion is supposed to be the best - least "slop".

jmack,
Both the PT and Stratus are Rack & Pinion steering, you should not have felt that much difference between the two. The ratio may be a little different between the two, that's all.

Oh it was quite different. Maybe since my rack and pinion was damaged, i couldn't really tell the difference. Nonetheless, they called this morning. they were like "Mr Mcdaniel, it seems we also will be needing to change the Axle Boots." I was like "um no. I have already had to squeeze the 700 dollars to fix this so No, you will not be doing that today."

If the boots have a hole in them (torn or punctured) it will allow water, dust & dirt to enter and ruin the CV joint, then you WILL have a real problem($$$'s). I suggest you take it to a garage or have someone inspect them to see if they ARE damaged. Or have the dealer show you the damaged boot. Somehow it dosen't seem that both of them would need to be replaced at the same time.

Well it is funny you mentioned that. My father and I actually looked at both of them just less than a month ago. They are fine, Hooligan. I just want my car back before they decide it needs 24K plated plugs or some other crap.
Crazie Eddie, that was a great site. I had forgotten about that wonderful site.

They called today. I get to go in the morning to pick it up. I am so glad to be getting that car back!
