Default Transmission Went

Well, the wife's '01 PT (80,000 miles) lost it's automatic transmission tonite. Check engine light came on and 60 miles later transmission made bad clunking noise and my wife pulled off of the road. PT wouldn't move and made bad sounds when she put it in any gear. The check engine light was solid so we were told it still could be driven. It's only when the light is blinking you should pull over quickly and turn off the engine. Had it towed to our place and Friday morning will be towed to dealer. Tow truck driver said he's towed a few PT's and minivans with blown trannys. Luckily we have an extended warranty. One of the main reasons we got the extended warranty was because of the automatic transmission.

Sorry to hear about the tranny, but it's a good thing it's covered under your extended warranty. I, too, purchased the extended warranty when I bought my PT a few months ago.

Bummer. Don't know why they can't make a more reliable tranny. I'm approaching 80,000 with mine, and it makes me nervous...[:I]

Good question Jimbo...I'm curious about the answer to that one also. A lot of people don't bother to do preventative maintenance. Quicksilver and I both did the tranny flush thing in hopes of making it last longer.

Yes we did at 56,000 miles. They are telling me the tranny is trying to shift into two gears at once. They have to take it apart to see what's up.

Wouldn't worry too much about your tranny's,most are going to last you longer than your PT. My 93 Dodge Spirit had 525,000 klicks on the original tranny when I traded her in on my PT.
BUT !! Don't abuse it and maintain it to Chrsler specs!!!

I heard that flushing your tranny makes it more prone to leaking?? [:I] A member of my club has crazy miles on his GT (I want to say 80K) and his dealer told him that it would be fine w/o a flush.

I am maintaining to Chrysler specs, but the abuse part...I don't know.
I'm running about 280 HP (flywheel) through it right now. Can't believe she is lasting this long.
Soon to be over 300 HP[8)]. We'll see how she likes that. I am looking for a beefed up, back up tranny now so I can do a quick swap out when #1 has had enough.
