Hmmm. I hope professional installers won't have a problem applying the tint on the upper part of the front windshield. I'm planning to do it to all my windows. Aside from the passenger & driver side windows, all the other windows have factory tint, but I understand it does not have any UV protection, which is why I plan to redo them with tints that do.

there are ways to help tint adhere to that dot matrix type coating around the edges of windows it is a ceramic type coating.

www.tintdude.com i think that is a site that has a forum you can search.

I had the front tint strip done, and it looks fine. Although I can relate to the statement of the tint not sticking well as I had an earlier car with that same "feel" around the rear window - and it started to bubble up after time...not much, mind you, but you could see the occasional bubble from the outside.

So it must be either the type or quality of the tint...or of the installer!

or the thickness of the black stuff.

On my econoline party wagon it has the dot matrix around the windows. After 5 years the tint is just starting to come up. A good tint shop will offer a lifetime warrantee on their work. not covering scratches caused by carelessness.

This is why my installer told me not to do the front window and only pay to get the sides done.

I think it is there so when you look in the rear view mirror if the sun is at the right angle you don't get blinded so much.

As long as it's for cosmetic purposes and nothing functional, then maybe I could just scrape it off with a blade, so the professional tinters won't have a hard time.

I was told by a fairly reliable source (vinyl installer) that it won't come off. I haven't tried but my 02 base w/o factory tint has it on the windshield and on the perimeter of the hatch glass & the rear quarter windows. I had a mirror tint done by Tintmasters 18 months ago & have no bonding problems yet.

i was helping my installer friend who also does tint. he had some no label chemical that he was brushing on to remove the black stuff from the top of a trans-am. now you know that huge curved rear window on the last generation ram-air type ones, this guy did the tint all in one piece, totally unreal. anyway the black stuff, it was really messy and tough to deal with and I dont think it is even possible to just scrape it off.

On the window sticker of mine there is a line on the standard features list that reads "Solar control windsheild" Since that dot matrix is the only thing different on the WS, I am assuming that is what it is.
When I first saw this solar control feature I thought "cool" a high tech WS. Wrong. I guess it served it's purpose, get them thinking they are getting something cool, and then you find out after you buy the car it's a bunch of black dots.
