Default Anyone know what that is on the front windshield?

It's been bugging me everytime I look at it, but I was wondering what that black, grated looking thing on the upper part of the front windshield is? It's above the rear view mirror. It's on my '04 PT GT, so I'm assuming it's on the other models as well. I'll post a pic if you don't know what I'm talking about.

nope don't have it on the '01 the top 6" or so of my windshield is tinted from the factory, this windshield was discontinued and is hard to find.
That is in lieu of the tint and is to prevent direct sunlight from passing through above the mirror. The VWs have a third little visor to flip down above the mirror.

It has a metalic feel to it. I thought it was an antenna, but I know it's not a radio antenna, nor a GPS antenna, since I don't have a GPS system. Unless it's an antenna used by the compas on the rear view mirror.

Eddie, as RallyDRock said, the black, grated looking thing is the new version of a windshield tint. It is limited to the small area over the rear view mirror. I believe the change from the tint band running all the way across the windshield to the small black area came with the late '02 models or just at the beginning of the '03 models. The seats sit so high in the PT that I guess Chrysler decided that the full tint strip was not needed (or else it was another cost saving measure taken by Chrysler like the elimination of the folding heated mirrors, the second horn, the external rear sway bar, the key lock for the front passenger door, the cargo net, etc, etc, etc).

We have a 2002, built in April 2002 and we have what you are calling the black grated area around the rearview mirror. I believe there were complaints from 2001 owners that the tinted area was too wide and people didn’t like looking through the tinted area all of the time, particularly tall drivers. The grated area is just around the mirror but the tinted area was the same width all the way across the windshield.

it's cheaper than internally tinting the window. If the sun bothers you, put the sunvisor down and that is the area that the visors do not cover.

tint is very cheap, and very easy to install if you take your time.

the temp sensor is behind the grille infront of the radiator.
the compass is in the overhead console and operates on magnetic principle.
If one attempted to tint over the black lines, the tint would not adhere properly and would look lousy. i have attempted to remove the lines on a different car and it was not worth the work involved.
