If you do have to change pads, go with ceramic pads. NAPA has a good record for pads.

if your fluid is low check your pads!!
my pt did the exact same thing and my pads were ready to be changed. Saved lots of money not waiting for the squealers.

I took my own advice and replaced the front brake pads this weekend with Raybestos QS pads (ceramic). Once I had everything apart I found that the pads were only worn about half way at 40,000 miles. I am easy on brakes. They still caused the brake warning light and chime to go off even with that amount of wear.

I had added fluid to stop the problem earlier, so of course I had to remove some of it using the brake bleeder BEFORE I contracted the pistons or I would have overflowed the master cylinder.

The new metal sliders that were included with the pads did not fit in the GT caliper, so I cleaned and lubed the old ones. I'll get some from a dealer next time. They are probably designed for the NA PT Cruiser calipers, but the pads fit perfectly.

Don't forget to bleed the brake lines. No one has mentioned this, but it should be done every time to get the air out of the system. The harder you are on the brakes, the more likely you will have air in your system. It will really help the pedal feel, and the brake system will function better.

Same was true with mine - pads had plenty left when light came on - you won't regret the ceramics - NO DUST![?]
