Default Welp, Just got it! Oh yeah, and about hacking GPS

I just picked up our '05 Limited today and we love it! Such an awesome car, so good looking, and way fun to drive!

We got the DVD GPS navigation dealie in ours and it's pretty cool with that little screen and talking lady voice.

The question I have, since I'm a hacker, is if anyone knows how to "hack" the GPS system to do other things such as play MP3 CDs/DVDs or even play DVD movies. I can't really find any information about it, but I would assume that the device in general reads a software program off the DVD. In the GPS navigation case, the software knows how to navigate. It seems that it could be possible to write a DVD that can do other things as well.

Does anyone have any leads on this? Or does anyone know the manufacturer of the navigation system?

Thanks, and we love our cruiser! It sure was stressful putting the first 100 miles on it already. I want it to stay new forever!

i wont tell you to do a search online for FIRMWARE upgrades for your specific headunit. i wont tell you that upgrading the firmare would do what you want.

I have a 2004 GT with the factory nav unit. You can pull the unit out of your dash easy. Remove the suround from the center of the dash (the window controls come off with a bit of a pry). Then you can pull the unit out of the dash and see who made it.
Also in the manual for the nav unit it tell how to upgrade the software, but I have been to their web site and it is not much help. The DVD for the nav system must be in the unit fot the system to work. I put a 10 or 12 cd changer under my seat and it was easy to hook into the radio unit. Love the nav system, but wish it was up higher and a little bit bigger. Neat stuff.

The Navigation system disc is from Alpine, so I will *assume* it is an ALpine-manufactured headunit.

Check the inside cover or back cover of the navigation DVD case, the Alpine logo is there.

Although this is a Jeep website, it has the most info on the Chrysler Navigation unit I've seen:

Thanks for all the information! I haven't had time to check much out yet (busy work schedule this week), but I'll get on it.

Specifically (in case anyone is wondering), I'm interested in coding something or downloading something that will allow the DVD unit to play MP3 CDs or an MP3 DVD (now THAT's a lot of music), or even play a video DVD. It might take some work, but that's all fun and games for me.

Thanks again!
