I tried a high performance oil filter on my last change and it made no difference. I brought the car into the dealer and they found that the wire coming from the sender was rubbing against something and was occasionally shorting out. They replaced the wire and rerouted it to prevent the rubbing. Now that is what the dealer told me. It still seems odd that this problem would only occur when starting the car. It never happened while I was driving. You would think that the vibration of driving might have caused more rubbing. Anyhow, the problem is fixed and it didn't cost me a nickel.
