Default trouble installing chrome bumper inserts

A couple of weeks ago, I ordered some goodies from Moss Motors for my cruiser (for my birthday). One of the things I got were the set of front and back chrome bumper inserts.

I have a 2001 Ltd Inferno Red with the grey bumpers.

I read the instructions and thoroughly cleaned my bumpers. I then used the adhesive solvent that came with the kit on the area. I started with the rear. I applied the 2 inserts on the rear. I could not get them to remain in place. They kept popping up on one end when I would press the opposite end. Seems like the curviture in the plastic did not properly match the curviture of the bumper. I tried and tried to get them to stick but nothing doing. I finally had to gently remove them.

I returned the inserts to Moss. They took them back with no complaint after hearing my explanation. Kudos to them for not giving me grief.

I was just wondering if any else has had a similar problem with any of the bumper inserts? I am disappointed that they didn't work, but I wouldn't want them falling off some time later. I am glad it happened early on.

I ordered and just put on the front set from Revel Enterprises. I'm sure they're the same company that makes the inserts for both Revel and Moss. The front fit right on without a problem and it's been about two weeks. I have the orginal 2001 bumpers painted body color. Maybe your's were stored in a heated area and somehow became out of shape.

I just installed the rear bumper inserts on my 'Cruiser a couple of weeks ago. Did you notice that there is a right and left? When I test fitted them (before removing the plastic on the tape), I put them in backwards and they did not fit correctly. Switched them around and all was good.

P.S. I also put on the front ones. They were flexible rubber but the rears were hard plastic. [:I]

The ones I had were from Auto-Technica (I think). They could not be reversed, so I am sure I applied them where they were supposed to go. I dry-fitted both of them before attempting it "live" with the tape backing off. I have no doubt that they were in the correct positions.

At one of our meets, a lady had them on her car. One kept popping off so a couple of the guys removed the 3M tape that came on it and applied newer tape and that seemed to fix the problem. Of course it took them almost an hour to do it but it worked.

When I installed mine I used a small bead of Liquid Nails down the center of the tape. The extra adhesive was just an "insurance factor" for me. No probs since June 2004.

Redhot & StonePT,

Both good suggestions. At least I know now I wasn't going crazy since someone else has seen a similar thing. Now that you mention it, at the time I thought that the 3M tape was not very sticky -- seemed a bit old and dried out. That may have been the whole problem. I may have the courage to try again soon. Thanks for sharing that info.

You may already know this, but use a hair dryer and heat up the old 3M tape to make it come off easier.

No I did not. Thanks for sharing that tip. I will remember that for future reference.
