Default My cruiser was stolen

My 16 year old grandaughter waited until my wife layed down for a nap, took the keys and away she went. She drove to a nearby town and let one of her 16 yr old friends drive it. They rear-ended another car, but the other driver took off. Police arrested her but no room in juvy so they let her go. She wont be staying at my house anymore. Car has front end damage and they said the radiator was leaking. Car is in police impound since last friday
Any comments?, Questions?

=mike...

I'm sorry, too Mike. Get pics, and start checking into good repair shops in the area. The other driver may come back after you, so be careful. I don't suppose your grandaughter is going to be much help...

Yea, the Insurance co. already thought about the other driver coming back.
I was thinking of letting the dealer fix it. Although we bought it last july, it only has 2500 miles on it. It stays in the garage. Its still like new. (was)

It sounds like the car will be fixed long before your relationship with your granddaughter is mended. What she did was very immature but she still has potential to change. This may not mean a lot to you now but thank God, no thanks to her, she wasn't injured herself.

Of course you have every right to express to her your hurt, your feeling of betrayal and how what she did has consequences for you both. Kick her out for now if emotions have to settle but maybe keep the door open a crack so that if and when she is ready to show remorse the opportunity will be there. Things can be replaced but granddaughters can't.

I don't know the whole story. If this is part of a ongoing pattern for her or not. I know that there are people who will hurt and take advantage of others for years and show no regret. You may very well have to insulate yourself from her for your own sake but I hope it's only for now.

I'm sorry your car is banged up and for the other kind of banging up that you got, too. I wish you better days ahead.

Well, thank you for the kind words. Yes, this will take some time to work itself out. This is an ongoing thing with her. I know I will forgive her but forgetting is another thing for us humans. Can't I just wake up tomorrow and she'll be 20 or 21 and love and respect us again? I guess not, LOL

Write the judge a long detailed letter explaining exactly how you feel, and what you think will help her grow up. You might try a church youth group, or even a military school.

Court is designed to punish her, so don't be too harsh on her on top of whatever they do, but do teach her to be responsible for her choices. For example, a visit to a hospital to see auto accident victims might encourage her to be more cautiious while driving.

People do stupid things, but especially teenagers!

You might tell her about foolish things you did as a teenager.

Good Luck.
