Default Turbo noises

Okay, my first experience with a turbo. I noticed absolutely nothing different except more power, but I just put in a K&N FIPK and at first I thought something was wrong...
When giving it a little gas from a stop, it sounds almost like a caliper scraping, then when I lift off I hear Pfffssst. Once I'm rolling and give gas, I only hear the Pfffssst when I let off, giving gas is almost silent.
Hoping this is normal....
Turbo guys, enlighten me.[:I]

QSD,

The noises you are hearing are normal. The FIPK replaced the stock intake tube which contains a silencer that eliminates all of the noises you are hearing.

You are hearing the turbo spool up when you press on the throttle. The "Pfffsst" sound is the surge valve (blow-off valve) venting the pressure from the turbo back into the FIPK prior to the turbo inlet whenever you close the throttle body butterfly. Chrysler engineered the recirculating surge valve (blow-off valve) to help the turbo stay spooled up. The Mopar blow-off valve conversion kit vents this pressure to the atmosphere (not the intake tube or, in your case, the FIPK) and you really hear the "Pffgsst" sound.

Thanks, Scott.
I hope it's worth it in pep and mileage. I looked at the inside of the stock intake - the tube was all full of corrugations - "bellows" - the K&N is a smooth plastic piece - HAS to flow better.[?]

I've had a K & N FIPK on a N/A 2002 for a long time and have found the K & N is allot louder than the other cold air systems that are out there.

I stopped hearing the FIPK intake noises once I took care of the exhaust system.

I am using the K&N Typhoon model I got from K&N for letting them prototype thier kits on my car a few summers ago. It makes a lot more noise but you get use to it and now I don't even think about it till I realy get on the turbo and it makes a high pitched wine and tons of HP! On a cruise it really dont make any more noise than stock in the passenger cabin. Good luck with your ride. I still love mine which I bought in Oct of 02 and it is a fully equiped GT.
