Default Buying 2001 PT

Okay, a friend has a very nice looking '01 PT with 47,000 miles on it. Does anyone have experience with that year's model and how they hold up before requiring lots of service. I've heard about Chrysler transmissions not lasting long. Is that true for PTs? We plan to take the car to our mechanic to check out first. My wife is concerned about buying from a private party vs. a dealer where we can get some kind of warrantee (even though it is used).

I had an '01 PT that was a good car until the auto tranny went out at 81,000 miles. There are problems with the auto tranny. I would have an extended warranty if I had an auto. We have a 90k mile warranty on my wife's automatic '04 PT. Haven't heard of any problems with the 5 speeds.

I went 87,000 miles on my first PT without any problems. HOWEVER - I had the auto tranny flushed and ATF+5 fluid put in - it's the synthetic version of ATF +4. I had it done at about 50,000 miles. I would strongly recommend it. The fluid helps.
