Default Whats up with factory oil filter

I have 500 miles on my 05 GT turbo convertiable so I wanted to put in some Mobil 1. I drained the oil and when I went to remove the original oil filter, what a pain.
I went thru 3 different filter wrenchs, I finally got it loose using a pliers type of wrench. It wasnt that the filter was hard to get too, it was just tight, when I finally got it off it was all tore up. It looked like I had used a screw driver to take it off.
I cant imagine these are supposed to be this tight, I installed the new one like I normally do by following the directions on the filter box. At least I feel better now having the Mobil 1 in it now.

Mine was hard to get off the first time also, it must create a vaccuum or something from sitting thru shipping and delivery.

Your not alone. So many Cruisers have reported the exact same findings. I agree with you on the filter being to tight. But you survived and now have none it right[?]

I doubt the guy at the factory has a bucket of oil to carefully wipe on each filter. That's likely the reason they are tough the first time. Maybe they should have a ring sponge like at the bar for the salt-on-the-rim application.

Nothing new. Over-tight filters has been a varying problem. Suppose it depends on who is installing the filters that day on the assembly line.

I heard about this problem and had the dealer do it as part of my 4 fre oil changes. I asked the service manager if it was hard to get off and he just smiled and said they never are too tight for us!! After my 4 changes were over I had my mechanic put on a new filter and he said it was not on too tight, but he did put on the N/A filter and my dealer went off on me for my ignorance.

I'm using the K&N oil filter which has a lug on the end of the filter housing so a wrench can be used to loosen the filter. A good idea!

I think, that when the filter is installed at the factory, they use an impact wrench... I don't think I've ever done a first oil change on a new vehicle, and not, had to destroy the filter to get it off...
