say to save time does anyone know if the pt key has a battery in it. i had extra keys made and used one of the duplicate keys to start the car, of course it would not stay running. i did the same thing with the original key by the columb and the car ran fine. i also want to add a remote starting system to this car and will have to get around that key. if i was to place the key inside the columb wire tyied to it somwhere will it keep working forever or will it use up the batt (if it has one) and then i will have to remove the key and get a new one. costs tons of money.

Bob, did you program the new key?

I didn't realize they did this with PTs, and I may be wrong... but this sounds like the system that Accords have in them since 98. There is a computer chip in the key, and it sends a signal to the car that they key is actually there. In the Accord, if the car is started without the key, the fuel pump does not start up. Therefore the car stops running within 1/4 mile.
That is my best guess as to what is happening to you, especially if you say it works with our old key near the column. As Michael said... should be fixed with programming.

When in doubt, read the manual.[B)]
Page 14 in the '04 owners manual tells you all about programing replacement keys.I found that info by looking at the index. ![]() |

The key is a rip off by chrysler. most PT have keys that have some **** chip in them so even if you have a cut duplica it wouldn't start the car for more than 2 seconds. read the manual. if you have 2 working keys now you're set but if you only have one key u're ****ed and need to bring this **** to the dealer. The remote you have program one yourself

thanks for this info but you all misunder stood me. i have the correct keys for the car the car starts and runs good with them. i had 2 keys cut at a local key place the are just for use in case i lock my good keys in the car and need to open the doors. now for the real question.
i put the fake key in the ignition and start the car it quits in about 2 seconds as you mentioned. i know this. what i want to know is if i place the computer chip key on the steering wheel and use the fake keys the engine will start and run. i need to know if the computer key has a battery in it that will go dead if the key is fixed to the columb? if the key will not go dead i will remove the cover to the columb and wire tie the real key inside there somewhere. even if i have to cut off the chip end and stuff it in there. if the real key will go dead then i have to figure out a different approach. this is also good for installing a remote starter. i have a wire diagram that show wrapping the ign switch and key to a relay to assit the remote starter but again if the real key chips go dead then i will have to figure it out a different way. thanks everyone for the replys. |

There is only a transponder chip inside the key head.
It resonates when the RKEM sends a transponder pulse. You can hide one inside the collumn if you want. This will disable the security feature. |

IF you want to do that, be advised your car can be stolen more easily - it can be hotwired - BUT, if you don't care, then there's PLENTY of room inside the column - 2 phillips screws at the bottom nearest the wheel, and 2 clips near the dash. I put a button switch for my Aoogah horn by the ignition switch.

What is the point of doing this? You still have to carry a key. What am I missing?
