We had rented a auto on vacation before buying one and it was a great car but A/C and hills did not work. We went with the 5 spd when we bought.

Got a maual because;
Cheaper, not only out of the showroom, but also to work on.
I like it, gives me more power when I need it.
And, well, I owned sticks overseas. What we called "island beaters" in Japan. They were pieces of crap you bought just to get you through the six months to three years you were stationed there (US military). So, push starts and duct tape repairs were common. Can't do that stuff on an automatic. Since then, I've never even looked at automatic transmissions, even though I own nicer cars now and take better care of them. It's habit by now.

I drove both the auto and Getrag 5-spd before buying. The manual was much more fun to drive but I've always prefered a manual shift over an automatic for a "sporty" car (I consider the GT "sporty").

Now as I look back and read the posts on the various PT websites the HD Getrag 5-spd has proven to get the best milage, be the most reliable, and has produced the top 5 cars on the PT "fastest times list". It is also much cheaper to mod for high HP applications. A HD auto will set you back around $2,500 while the Getrag only needs a HD clutch that sells for $400. Of course at the high HP applications both will probably need HD aftermarket axles (around $550) to survive more than a summer or two at the dragstip.

It was cheaper

The stealership offered a deal on the base model 5-spd PT's when I bought - something like $5K under every other local stealership. Plus I like the 5 speed when I'm not in traffic, sitting and cruising at 15-20 mph (then I wish it were an auto).

I like it. My maroon 7-ball shifter looks cool against the charcoal interior.

I got mine so I could enjoy the Turbo Boost better than the auto. To me, anything under a V-8 needs to be manual.

The turbo really kicks! [8)]
