Just curious is anyone swapped out their stock turbo for a larger one and what improvements they saw?[:I]

Frequently going to a larger turbo will increase the maximum boost at the expense of introducing more turbo lag.

Like Michael said,
You may install a biger turbo but it will take longer to spool up to speed, making the car slugish at first and then go like crazy. This could get a little bothersome if you are using the car on a daily basis. A good example is one of my Ricer friend's Celica GT. His car has a T03/T04 Hybrid compressor capable of producing massive loads of power! The downfall, you can count to three before the turbo starts to spool up and go to its adjusted setting of 12PSI. He is producing 254WHP! but it feels like a Mack Truck at first. I noticed the diference also at higway speeds. Our GTs keep a positive pressure intake and as soon as you accelerate, the car goes quickly to the 12+PSI world. His car in the same environment is at -16 at cruising speed and if you accelerate, it creeps to 0 and then it jumps to 12PSI. Nonetheless, for a ricer with 140 Crank HP (120WHP) Jump to 254WHP, I think is an amazing thing. Also his car weighs 2,280LBS Vs our 3000+ weight. Also, YES, he kicks my A$$ at the track! At the lights, I jump in front but once his turbo spools up... It feels like if I had opened a parachute in my PT!!! Ian

There are two people at another PT site who have larger turbo's. One just received his upgrade a day ago and has not installed it yet. Another guy is sorting out the various problems associated with a new "toy" and still has yet to get it all sorted out. Presently he is making more power than the factory clutch can hold and will need to install an aftermarket clutch. Luckily there is a clutch out on the market that can handle upwards of 500 HP that will fit our turbo PT's.
For Cruisers with an auto tranny you will need to upgrade to a HD automatic if you go with a larger turbo...they are available also. My guess is if you check back about springtime you will find 5-6 PT's with larger turbo's that have all the necessary modifications and results will be posted by then. Deen

Something else to consider with a bigger turbo and the lag is you can do what Toyota did with the Supras and have your big turbo and a small one infront of it as a pusher for the big one. Then again this will take up a lot of space and doubt our PTs have enough in that area.

I am one of the guys that Deen is referring to. I have the Psi-Fi GTS58 kit. The "problems" with the turbo were not associated with the turbo at all. I just needed to get the proper supporting mods on the car to reduce the turbo spool time. This included a larger FMIC and a full 3" exhaust. I also decided to go with 750cc injectors.
Without the exhaust and FMIC the full spool was 3800 - 3900, ouch. With the upgrades it dropped down to around 3400. All was good, with just the S2 injectors but when I bumped up to the 750cc injectors my clutch wouldn't hold at 24psi. The best time I have had was 13.7@106 the day I picked up the car. This was with a lot of tire spin and all of the restrictions. I haven't been to the track since or taken it to the dyno but I would guess that the car is making 400+ HP and will do the 1/4 in the 12's. I am going to be getting an upgraded clutch and I hope to get to the track soon. Right now their are two big turbo kits available. Psi-Fi and AGP. Feel free to PM me with any questions. |

I have the AGP t3-t4 50trim .63ar with the powerdemon automatic, but there is alot more than bolting on a turbo, engine and turbo management, upgraded fuel pump, fuel return system, injectors, and self control,
I drove the car for a couple of months and the power was crazy, but I had the wrong convertor in the car. A couple of weeks ago we swapped in the correct TC, which let the rpm build faster, ect ect ect, anyway puked the bottom end out, Either, 1 Too much boost at too much load 2 balance shafts were uncooperative 3 oil pump failure I have to tear the bottm end apart at some time. |

Nice to see an AGP kit in use. They are local for me and i am working with them on a couple new products for the cruiser. BTW, anyone with the big turbo needs to have better motor mounts (ommision makes trannys puke too). I am going to go with a GT35 turbo or a T67 by next month. [?] I'm tired of losing to corvettes.
