I've been reading the various posts about using acetone to help boost performance and mileage. I tried it in our Town & Country and didn't see any significant increase. However, the motor surely seemed to run better. Last Monday I was going on a 120 mile round trip with mostly highway 55-65 mph driving. I added 2oz. per 10 gallons to Mobil 93 octane gasoline. My usual mpg for a trip like this is 26-28 mpg. Great weather and vitually no wind showed 36.5 mpg. I couldn't squeeze another drop in the tank! I know it is only one example, but I certainly am intrigued and will continue to explore the possibilities. Has anyone else had any experiences with acetone and their PT GTs?

Bad idea.....will kill fuel lines rubber and plastic over time.

I realize those fears, but we're talking 3 oz. per 2100 oz of gasoline. This is like .0015 of the volume. Any thoughts?

I'd be more concerned about the fuel pump and injectors. Honestly, if this was a safe way to get the performance increase that you saw, it would already be in the gasoline. Proceed with caution, because the downside can get very expensive.

I appreciate the cautions. However, in looking at injector cleaners and fuel system additives at several auto supply stores, I see that acetone is the main ingredient in some products. I see on several other forums there is quite a bit of discussion concerning acetone. I was just curious if there were any here that had experience with it. Thanks again.

Small amounts of acetone will not harm engine components however the fuel lines will swell if too strong a concentration is used. Also, 100% dry acetone is required. Acetone attracts moisture and must be kept in an air-tight and preferable amber colored container.
The good way to determine optimal concentration is on a vehicle that has the feature to show "current gas maileage" and tweaking the mix ratios. I'd also remove a fuel line periodically to check for internal problems or "softness" inside the hose. http://www.lubedev.com/smartgas/additive.htm |
