Default life expectancy of a turbocharger?

hi all,

anyone know what is the actual life expectancy (miles) of the pt’s factory turbocharger? (assuming the oil and filter are changed approx every 3000 miles and the turbo is not too badly abused or thrashed).

Any high-mileage pts out there - still with their original turbo?

I'm on 6 PT Forums, and haven't read of a single turbo failure. One or two modified turbos blew the standard auto tranny, but no turbo deaths.
I would recommend a synthetic oil, such as Mobil 1.

I have had a turbo that went 180K miles on the 2nd turbo and was still good when I sold the car. Using synth oil. That was the second turbo charger in that car. The first ate itself up in 40K miles using Dino oil.

I've always used synthetic and my turbo went out at 45k on my GT. Turns out a small boost look led to its failure and it overspun itself and commited suicide. Basically it was red hot after i looked at it, like glowing.....[xx(] It could not release the exhaust gases fast enough and just burnt up.

I can't say regarding the PT Cruiser. But both I and a co-worker had Dodges with the old 2.2 turbo. I traded mine with over 100,000 and she put much more than I did on hers. No problems with the turbo on either car.

I have a 03 GT and at around 30,000 mile the turbo in the morning would make a loud ticking noise when you first gave it some throttle and have boost. Took it to the dealer and told him, they said that one of the bearing was gone and replaced the entire turbo. But one bad thing, it took them a week and 2 days to get one, shipped in from Dallas and I lived in Naples Florida. I used Moblie 1 since 4000 miles. I don't have no upgrades, no stage one, just a bone stock GT. I have now 46,000 and everything is fine, but did have a rubbing noise from the 5 speed in the shifting linkage for about a week then went away. everything else is good and would buy another one.

Cool Re: life expectancy of a turbocharger?

Mine is a 2003 Dream Cruiser with the TDO-4LR turbo. It finally let go @114,000 miles. It was the oil seal that leaked about 15 Qts. of oil on my way home to St Louis from Key West. It still ran but it looked like I fogged all of Florida and the rest of the SouthEast. Having trouble finding a replacement or repair outside of the dealerships. Not much on these forums. finally got it off and am sending it for a rebuild to Houston. Had similar situation with a 1986 T-Bird Turbo Coupe. Pretty much done with turbo's, they are fun but can be a pain if used for any length of time.
