discoloration of intake manifold

a while back there was a post about the intake manifold getting all wierd with colors and what not i had a rag with the K&N filter cleaner drop on my intake and it cleaned it up nice...

hi - are you talking about a black carbon-like film?

it almost looks like blow-by, even though the intake bolts are tight (won't budge)...

That is the one of the reasons I came up with a flow back catch can and a brass check valve between the PVC valve and intake manifold. I got tired of cleaning the dirt impregnated oil film on the manifold and the other areas. So far it works great and the engine stays clean.

I clean my engine and intake using Simple Green and an air hose when the engine is cold. I do not use water to rinse or soak. This works great but I must be careful around electrical connections since the air pressure can drive moisture into connectors. If you must use water on dirtier engines I would suggest putting it in a spray bottle rather than using a garden hose.
I'm sure Gary has a different approach and you can find many of his cleaning tips on this forum.
