When to start using Synthetic Oils

I am the new and proud owner of a 2005 limited turbo PT. It has 850 miles on it and I believe in changing oil at the 1000 mile mark to clean out any assembly oils and metal shavings that might have been left behind.
Synthetic oils are slicker and clean out crud better than other oils thus they are not as good for generating that little bit of wear you need to break in a new motor. Is the 1000 mile mark a reasonable amount of mileage to allow for break in to start using synthetics or should I make one change with petroleum oils and make the switch at 4000?

Thanks for you time in answering in advance,

Chip,

I've seen this question asked and answered twenty different ways on this forum alone, with answers ranging from "you should put synth in at the start because the newer engines are machined to such standards that you don't need to worry about going a few thousand with dino" and "if synth wasn't good from the start the manufacturer wouldn't put them in new corvettes" to "you should wait X, Y or Z miles" for "A, B, or C reasons". If you do a search on the word synthetic you will probably find a lot of good opinions but no sure conclusion.

Only point I'm trying to make is there are many opinions on this. Personally, I went with Mobil 1 on my first change, at 2,500 miles.

i would run it after the first change of 3k or in your case you should be fine. the reason is this on a new engine like say a race engine if you run synthetic oil right away you can run in to ring problem with them not seating right because the oil is too slippery. i have a big block chevy that is close to 900hp and when the engine gets new rings it runs on the dyno to seat the rings first then gets synthetic oil. your rings should be seated properly by now.

Thanks for the info. This weekend she goes in and gets the Mobil 1 change.

Run it now...Do you think that the dodge viper and the corvette amoung other cars would not install Mobil 1 from the factory if it would hurt the engine....I dont think so...[xx(]

Welcome, Chip. I changed mine to Mobil 1 at about 500 miles - as I did with my '02.[?]
