I went with 215 50s. Purchased a set of Fusion ZRi tires--an excellent tire (nearly unanimous praise in reviews at Tire Rack) and are quite reasonably priced ($91 per). I found that they are noticeably wider & a huge improvement over the stock Goodyears (in terms of grip). However, they do appear to me to be noticeably taller and make the car look less 'hunkered down.' Perhaps this will change as the tires wear. Nevertheless, I highly recommend them (though next time, I'm going with the 45 series).
I got the Fuzions too. Best bank for buck IMHO.

Take a look at these tires -

The were ranked # 1 out of 22 tires in the high performance category at tire rack, and they're pretty cheap!

I put on 215 50 Yokohama Avid V4S on stock GT rims and I love them after 8,000 miles. Wet and dry grip is fantastic and tread wear looks twice as good as the RSA's!

I went with Conti. Extreme Contacts 215/50R17 - lowered with HyperCo springs. Outstanding in dry and wet very good in snow - ice is problamatic. Rotated a 5k - very little visible wear. Some have reported noise pbms. I've had none so far.

I am not sure what the largest for 17" rims are but I resently put 225/50's on my 16" rims and they are 6" wide also. You have to look at the tech data for the tire to see what the applicable rim widths are for the tire. For the tire I bought it said it would fit 6-8" wide rims. It just depends on the look you want on the rim.

Don't forget to check these out... very good reviews on tirerack.com, low price, and they are very aggressive-looking...
