Default Help Gen Turbo info

Calling in the experts on this one. Tell a little bit about "turbo lag" and what it might sound like to hear the turbo spool. I know people have said its normal to get hesitation inbeteen shifts (manual) but I also notice just as I'm giving it gas after a shift what may be a spooling sound? is that when it occurs? It happens for 1-2 seconds and goes away instantly. mostly in the 1 or 2nd grear range. I also don't get on the car often but when I do and take the RPM's a little higher I hear a rattling noise??? not sure if this is a normal sound or not. I think with the louder exhuast it magnifies everything under the hood as well. If the engine guru's can chime in that would be great. Thanks...gary

Hi Gary,

I have a '04 Turbo with a K&N FIPK2 and a BOV installed. You can hear all sorts of things coming out of the engine compartment. The turbo will vibrate a little bit near idle, and it whistles at high RPM. That's what I get for taking the silencers and airbox out. Which exhaust do you have? I ran without a muffler for 6 weeks, which although entertaining, loud and performance enhancing, eliminated any notion of luxury. (I put it back on, I like having a conversation while driving.) I live nearby, so let me know if you want to go for a ride and see what it sounds like.

Yes, it's nice to be able to hear your radio, CDs, and conversation with passengers when driving. When you remove "everything" stock that was put there to keep things quite you will hear "normal sounds" that you never knew existed. I recommend that you go to some PT Cruiser events to see/hear the various exhaust systems so you can decide for yourself which one might work best for you: http://www.ptcruiserlinks.com/forum/...TOPIC_ID=13109

Good luck.

If you have a stop bypass valve (BOV) the rattling sound could be it fluttering. Depends on what it sound like.

As to hesitation between shifts, a turbo with a stick takes some finess to drive well. Being able to slip shifts fairly briskly will reduce the lag that you get with a slow shift. When you close the throttle body the bypass valve releases excess boost that would slam against the butterfly valve. That is good for the throttle body but not good for keeping boost level up. Turbos work well with automatics for just that reason, you can just keep your foot in the throttle. I just like to shift myself though.

Spooling up? If you have an some type of open intake like a Airraid or the like, you will hear a pronounces whine as RPM's build, mostly under WOT above 3000-3500 RPMs. Sounds like a jet engine spooling up only not so much so.

Someone needs to explain how to shift with the gas engaged. Seems to weird for me, I always was taught to let up on gas, shift, apply gas. I guess I need shifting class 101. [:I]

Hi Gary,

Couple of thoughts:

1) Shifting - you do seem to shift *politely* for having Stage I installed. It probably goes against the WOT optimization and causes the lag. (you are taking it easy by its standards.) Oh, and this is why I'm lazy and drive automatic. Mash the gas and go. No human mistakes or delays.

Stage I Manual Product Pitch:
Increased WOT and part throttle boost
Enhanced 1st gear boost schedule for a higher performance launch <- !!!
Optimized calibration for the Mopar Blow-Off Valve Conversion Kit (4510548)
Improved turbo response
Boost hold feature during WOT shifts <- !!!
Soft rev limiter

2) Loudness - Your car is definitely a lot louder in the cabin than mine, however I have the stock exhaust and the turbo is setup for 'turbo lite', a lot less boost. This could explain why it is louder in your car than you'd expect. I'd try comparing it with someone else with a Stage 1.

3) Problems indicated by noises - the lack of any error codes means that it's running fine as far as the computers are concerned, so i doubt the mechanicals are out of order. (You'd expect a misfire warning or some other warning.) All of the flutters and whizzes sounded in line with what my car sounds like.

4) Bath Time for me - Yeah, it's definitely time for a bath. It's a bad sign when your Graphite Metaillic Platinum Series looks like a Black PT with Chrome. I'll probably knock the salt off on Friday.

- AJ
