Default synthetic to regular oil to turbo breakdown

i switched from mobil-1 to castrol at 16K miles, then continued to change my oil every 3000 miles.

now, at 25,000 miles my turbocharger needs to be replaced. did switching from synthetic to conventional oil cause this? - or is this a coincidence?[:I] any thoughts would be appreciated. thanks.

It's a known fact that switching to synthetic oil for the Turbo's will help prolong their life. Turbo's get extremely hot (as you probably know) and can cook conventional oil especially when you turn the engine off. The oil isn't moving around anymore at shutdown to help the oil cool. Synthetic can still protect the engine and bearings well below freezing and well above the temperatures a conventional oil will go.

Was it a coincidence that your Turbo blew 14K after switching? Probably the parts that failed would have to analized to be sure.

appreciate the reply crewzin.

i'm pretty sick about this whole ordeal. the warranty offically ran out on dec/2005. it's still - in the air - if the chrysler dealership i took it too will honor it as a warranty repair, as the turbocharger is on back order. i'll keep this site posted.

in the meantime, it would be great to hear how long other turbochargers have lasted from others on this site and what the typical repair bill (parts and labor) might be.

Sorry to hear about your turbo. When you get it all fixed only use synthetic oil in your turbo, I always do in my turbo cars. In fact, I use synthetic in all my cars, n/a or turbo.

When I bought my first turbo car back in the early 80's I didn't use synth for the first 40K miles or so. Fried that turbo. Covered under factory 3/50 warranty. The dealer suggested I switch to synth and I drove that 2nd turbo to 180K+ miles when I sold the car and it was still blowing along. Nuthin' but synth ever since.

I still have my '85 Shelby Charger 2.2L turbo with the Indy PCM and injectors and still the factory turbo. Running 20 psi boost with her and she is still going. Only problem I have is keeping her from trashing motor mounts every year. Some suggested I just use chains to hold the motor in place and am about to try that. The engine would roll so far that sometimes it would make the shifter arm hit the hole in the floor board and knock her out of gear But anyways if you use synthetic and don't shut her down quickly after running her hard or right after you get off a highway the turbo will last a long time.

I've also used Mobil 1 since my first oil change, Mostly because you can get at Costco pretty cheap, so far no problems. After 60k I started using Mobil Clean 1500, no problems also. I'm almost at 80k and I've been thinking about switching to Pennzoil Platinum, I've talked to technichians who specialize in this field and they have told me that they have never tested a synthetic oil that runs so clean. Has anyone else tried this brand of synthetic oil?

I personnally hate Penzoil and would never use it. I don't know about their synthetic but their dino oils are some of the dirtiest ones out there not to mention they break down rather quickly. I speak from exerience on this as well.

Well what caught my attention with Pennzoil's Platinum synthetic oil is that it uses an additive called "adaptive molecules." From what I heard is when these molecules in the oil get heated they split to become more viscouse, then when it cools it reforms. Weird huh. There suposed to be a bunch of additives and detergents in the synthetic oil too.
